Zine World A Reader s Guide to the Underground Press is an independent publication which covers independent and underground media. It reviews mostly zines , but also books, comics, newsletters, videos and spoken word recordings. The material it covers is generally available directly from the publishers rather than through larger commercial outlets, and each review includes ordering information and other specifics such as whether or not the item is free to prisoners, or the publisher s policy on barter . Zine World also covers news concerning abuses against free speech and other topics of interest to the independent publishing community. It has also published essays from Karl Wenclas , Jeff Somers , and other prominent underground writers. The magazine was launched in the 1990s by Doug Holland as a more opinionated alternative to Factsheet 5 , but has continued publishing since its larger competitor s disappearance in 1998. It was once widely decried for running gratuitously negative reviews particularly from departed contributor Joe Gallo , but is now less controversial. It now publishes roughly three times a year. Jerianne Thompson acts as editor and supervises the all volunteer staff. A punk zine or punkzine is a zine devoted to punk subculture punk culture, most often punk rock music, bands, or the DIY punk ethic . Punk zines are the most likely place to find punk literature . Image UK and US zines.jpg thumb 300px right Selection of British and American punk zines, 1994 2004 One of the earliest punk zines was the New York magazine Punk magazine Punk . It was started by John Holmstrom, Ged Dunn, and Legs McNeil , who published the first issue in January 1976. The zine championed the early New York underground music scene and helped associate the word punk with these bands, most notably, The Ramones. Punk received a flash of attention in England until 1977 when the punks across the Atlantic started making their own punk zines. An early United Kingdom UK punk zine was Sniffin Glue , produced by Mark Perry musician Mark Perry , who also founded the band Alternative TV , in 1976. However, the magazine never applied this term to itself, and indeed it is thought that it did not come into use until the early 1980s. The term punkzine was possibly coined amongst anarcho punk circles, specifically by writers who objected to the connotations of the word fan zine, believing the first part of the word to imply the slavish following of pop music pop band music group s, and unquestioning acceptance of celebrity culture. The DIY aesthetic of punk created a thriving underground press someone could not only start a band but also be a music journalist and critic. DDT sometimes published as Dada Tennis, or Da da Tennis was a magazine of bizarre free surrealist writings and graphics, which were chiefly created by its editor, Bill Paulauskas , who died in 2006. It was published by Paulauskas Dream State Press, which he operated in New York City . Its publication history is long and complex it first grew out of freewheeling interactions on a computer bulletin board site Bulletin board system BBS called The Enterprise, in the late 1980s, then moved to Paulauskas own Dreamworld BBS, before starting to appear in print form. The magazine continued to exist in print form, on an erratic schedule it also for a few years in the early 1990s was a multimedia computer disc designed for use in the Amiga computer. During its computer disc phase the magazine was sometimes co edited by the novelists James Chapman author James Chapman and Randie Lipkin , who were also contributors. Some of the work done at this time was later adapted theatrically by the http www.dadanewyork.org DADAnewyork theatre troupe founded by the late John W. Wilson an original Joffrey Ballet member and Dada scholar these pieces were performed internationally to considerable confusion. Along with text and graphics, Paulauskas also created an audio adjunct to his zine, Krelltone Records, a project of his Lost in Wallpaper Collective, which featured recordings of Paulauskas strange poetry and found sounds from throughout all recorded history, collaged together to hilarious and disturbing effect. He was also a filmmaker, and the final issue of DDT published in 2005 appeared on DVD. DEFAULTSORT Ddt Zine Category Zines Category Defunct American literary magazines ... more details

Each issue of the zine examined a single cartoonist or type of comic in depth, often incorporating interview s done by Raeburn with or about the subject. Raeburn frequently took an idiosyncractic view of his subject matter in The Imp in the Introduction essay introduction to the first issue he wrote that the fact that I don t know anything about comics can only help me to take them seriously. He frequently described his personal experiences with his subject matter in irreverent terms and gave detailed accounts of the people and places he encountered while doing his research, in the manner of gonzo journalism . The Imp is also notable for the unique design of each issue. The Imp 1 was published in 1997 and was devoted to the works of Daniel Clowes . The second issue appeared a year later and examined the religious comics of Jack T. The fourth issue of The Imp , released after a long delay, examined extremely lurid Mexico Mexican Mexican comics historietas and their cultural and commercial context. It featured extensive full color illustrations and an original painted cover commissioned from a Mexican comic artist. Inspired by punk zines such as Chainsaw punk zine Chainsaw , Peroxide lasted only two issues, with McKay being ousted by Cook after the first issue. Whilst Cook remained in the music business, McKay became a writer on the visual arts and culture, while Thomas moved into the business sector he is currently the publisher of Communicate magazine and owner of Cravenhill Publishing. Unreferenced date December 2009 Notability date March 2010 Gallery was an APA zine for cartoonists and illustrators, a significant proportion of which had contents that were anthropomorphic or funny animal in nature, which ran quarterly from the fall of 1989 to the winter of 2004 issues 0 through 50 . It was described by its creator Richard Chandler as a cross between an Amateur press association APA and a fanzine . History When Richard Chandler was first getting started in furry fandom , he became aware of two Amateur press association APAs , Rowrbrazzle and its predecessor, Vootie . He discovered that although he heard about them, he was not able to locate any copies to view because they were only available to members Vootie had ceased publication before Rowrbrazzle began, and the waiting list to join the later was estimated to be 3 years long at the time he inquired. While he hadn t seen either Amateur press association APA , he had seen copies of some of the artwork inside them and was very impressed. Lacking drawing skills and not wanting to wait to join, Richard Chandler decided to start his own fanzine in the fall of 1989. Feeling shut out from the other publications, he decided to make it open to subscribers, and created the first Amateur press association APA that paid royalties. Since he was not well known, he arranged the finances as a non profit, figuring that would make him look more trustworthy this was very important to him, and he made other efforts to uphold it as his standard .
