Secular Buddhism is a currently emerging form of buddhism that is based on humanistic, agnostic values and scientific research rather than religious beliefs. When interpreting the teachings of Gautama Buddha it also tries to consider the historic and cultural background of the time. History One of the first people to explicitly present a secular form of buddhism was Stephen Batchelor author Stephen Batchelor . Like many of today s proponents of secular buddhism, he was a buddhist monk ordained in the more traditional forms of buddhism. From his experience as a monk practicing Tibetan Buddhism and later Zen , he felt the need for a more secular and agnostic approach. In his books Buddhism without Beliefs and Confession of a Buddhist Atheist he describes his approach to buddha s teaching and describes Siddh rtha Gautama as a historic person rather than a idealized religious icon. Secular Buddhism has since spread mainly in the west. Overview of Philosophy Secular buddhism considers buddhism in all countries and times to be influenced by the cultural and historic beliefs of the society it entered. This does also apply to secular buddhism, where e.g. the decline of authorities can be derived from the decline of authorities in democratic societies. Furthermore, it tries to emphasize the more agnostic and sceptic elements of Buddhism. For example the Buddha asked his follower not to simply trust any written word but to investigate on themselves. Refimprove date December 2009 Critical Buddhism is a trend in Japan ese Buddhist scholarship, associated primarily with the works of Hakamaya Noriaki and Matsumoto Shir .
