  1. The Plants

The Plants were a doo wop quartet, based out of Baltimore, Maryland and formed in 1955. James Lawson baritone , Thuman Thrower bass , Steve McDowell first tenor and George Jackson lead constituted the original line up, who were known as The Equadors . They got their break from Zell Sanders , owner of J&S Records , performing for her backstage at the Royal Theatre Baltimore Royal Theatre during a concert by The Moonglows . They released their debut, Dear I Swear in autumn of 1957, but it failed to achieve national success despite being a regional hit. They released another failed single in 1958, From Me , after appearing on The Buddy Dean Show , a major musical venue in Baltimore at the time. A new lineup was assemebled in 1958 by Zell Sanders, recording I Searched the Seven Seas , while Jackson pursued a solo career, releasing a few singles during the 1960s. In this work, Goethe essentially discovered the serially homologous nature of leaf organs in plants, from cotyledons , to photosynthetic leaves, to the petals of a flower . Although Richard Owen , the powerful British vertebrate anatomist and staunch opponent of Charles Darwin , is generally credited with first articulating a definition of the word homology biology homology in 1843 , it is clear that Goethe had already arrived at a sophisticated view of homology and transformation within an idealist morphological perspective more than fifty years earlier. 1. Thermogenic plants

Thermogenic plants have the ability to raise their temperature above that of the surrounding air. Heat is generated in the mitochondria , as a secondary process of cellular respiration called thermogenesis . Alternative oxidase and uncoupling proteins similar to those found in mammals enable the process, which is still poorly understood. The role of thermogenesis Thermogenesis in plants can serve a variety of purposes, including allowing a species to grow in a climate where it would not otherwise be found, or at a time of year in which it would normally be plant physiology dormant . Plants which raise the ambient temperature by a significant amount may even be found growing through patches of snow. attracting pollinators by volatilizing scents and spreading them through the air, or by providing a habitat for insects in a cold climate. Insects attracted by the heat or scent of a thermogenic plant are encouraged to spread its pollen , aiding in reproduction. Examples of thermogenic plants Thermogenic plants are found in a variety of families, but Araceae in particular contains many such species. Examples from this family include the eastern skunk cabbage , the dead horse arum , the elephant yam and Philodendron selloum , also known as elephant ear. The carrion flower Amorphophallus titanum also uses thermogenically created water vapor to disperse its scent that of rotting meat above the cold air that settles over it at night in its natural habitat in Sumatra . ref name NewScientist wcb 1 Cite journal last Schultz first Nora authorlink http www.newscientist.com search?rbauthors Nora Schultz coauthors title Giant stinking flower reveals a hot secret journal New Scientist date 2008 12 22 publisher Reed Business Information Ltd. url http www.newscientist.com article dn16316 giant stinking flower reveals a hot secret.html accessdate 2008 12 29 ref ref Cite journal doi 10.1111 j.1438 8677.2008.00147.x title A torch in the rain forest thermogenesis of the Titan arum Amorphophallus ...   more details

  1. Nutation in plants

Nutation, in plants , is the bending movements executed by some plant organ s, such as stems, leaves, roots, etc., by which the part is inclined successively in various directions. ref name int incorporate NIE ref Nutations are due to the unequal rate of growth of different sides of the organ, an inequality which, so far as is known at present c. 1915 , is dependent upon internal unknown causes and is not called forth by the action of external stimuli. The word is often used in a broad sense in the phrase nutational movement , to include all the movements in plants caused by growth in contrast to variation movements or movements produced by reversible Turgor pressure turgor changes. ref name int incorporate Simple nutation occurs in dorsiventral organs, such as flat leaves, both foliage and floral. The movements are only in one plane, depending upon the unequal growth of the opposite sides. When young the growth of the foliage leaves is most rapid upon their outer dorsal face, in consequence of which the leaf applies itself to the axis, arches over the apex, and with its neighbors forms a compact bud. Later growth becomes more rapid on the inner ventral face, the bud opens, and the leaves straighten out. Similar inequality of growth, but more sharply localized, leads to the folding and rolling of the leaf in the bud. Like movements of radial organs, such as stems, cylindrical leaves, and roots, have been termed circumnutation, or revolving nutation, to distinguish them from the simple nutation of dorsiventral organs. When any plant is in vigorous growth the axis rarely grows in length uniformly on all sides. The side on which growth is most rapid will push the apex over towards the side on which growth is less rapid. If the region of more rapid growth changes, shifting around ... stimuli . Such maize cobs are cultivated for decorative purposes. The endosperm tissue, which makes up most of the bulk of a maize seed, is not produced by the mother plant, but is the product of fertilization, and genetic factors carried by the pollen affect its colour. For example, a yellow seeded race may have its yellow colour determined by a Dominance genetics recessive allele . If it receives pollen from a purple seeded race that has one copy of a dominant allele for purple colour and one copy of the recessive allele for yellow seed, the resulting cob will have some yellow and some purple seeds.
