  1. Pontage

Pontage was a medieval toll levied for the building or repair of bridge s. Pontage was similar in nature to murage a toll for the building of town walls and pavage a toll for paving streets and market places, or more rarely roads between towns . Pontage was granted by the king by letters patent for a limited term, sufficient to enable the requisite public works to be done. However, sometimes the works were not completed or at least not paid for by the end of the term, so that a renewal had to be obtained. Grants were made from 1228 until the 1440s, the earliest being for bridges at Ferrybridge , Yorkshire and Staines , an important crossing of the river Thames . In all about 370 grants were made. The term pontage is also applied to lands in Cambridgeshire , which were liable to repair the bridge of Cambridge as an incident of tenure . References A. Work on the chancel did not commence until 1507 and completed around 1530 which was when the west tower was also extended to its current height. King James I of England James VI was crowned King of Scots on 29 July 1567 John Knox performed the ceremony. This makes the Church of the Holy Rude and Westminster Abbey the only churches in Britain still in use to this day that have been the sites of coronation s. ref http www.holyrude.org history.htm History of the church , Church of the Holy Rude website ref References reflist External links commonscat inline http holyrude.org The Church Of The Holy Rude coord 56.120882 N 3.944521 W source nlwiki region GB type landmark format dms display title DEFAULTSORT Holy Rude, Church of Category 1129 establishments Category 12th century in Scotland Category 1410s architecture Category 1440s architecture Category Buildings and structures completed in 1530 Category Churches in Stirling Category Category A listed buildings in Scotland Category Listed buildings in Stirling council area Category Listed churches in Scotland Category Church of Scotland churches Category Coronation church buildings Scotland church stub fr glise de la Sainte Croix de Stirling nl Church of the Holy Rude no Det Hellige Kors kirke i Stirling ...   more details
