Orphan date November 2006 The Sonman MineExplosion occurred on July 15, 1940, at the Sonman Shaft Coal Co. near Portage, Pennsylvania , in the United States . 63 miners died out of the estimated 90 trapped in the mine after the initial explosion. The explosion was centered in a section of the slope called the Right No. 16 heading. The rescue effort was hampered by the deadly methane gas which was presumed to have filled the chamber. In 1960, a memorial to the miners who died in the explosion, originally located in Jamestown, Pennsylvania , was relocated to the Crichton McCormick Park in Portage. The Portage Station Museum offers a documentary about the disaster titled 63 Men Down The Story of the Sonman MineExplosion along with coal mine and railroad artifacts and exhibits. The Drummond Mineexplosion , also the Drummond Colliery Disaster , was a mining accident that happened in Westville, Nova Scotia Westville , Pictou County, Nova Scotia on May 13, 1837. The Drummond mine was, in 1873, considered Canada s leading colliery . However, small fires were constantly erupting in the coal seam s. On May 13, Fireman Robert McLeod started a small fire with gunpowder on a ledge of coal and attempted to extinguish it in the usual way, with a bucket of water. Unable to do so after 20 minutes and several buckets, he left and alerted the manager, James Dunn. When he returned, the blaze had grown beyond control. He ran for safety, just as the first explosion occurred, around 12 15. The first explosion killed and wounded many in the mine, including manager James Dunn. As miners on the surface were discussing the rescue of the injured, the second explosion occurred. This was far more powerful, acting with the force of a volcano. ref name NYT1873 Cite news url http query.nytimes.com gst abstract.html?res 9E03EFD9173AE63BBC4D52DFB3668388669FDE title THE DRUMMOND MINE.
