ElectionsNY The 1939NewYork state election was held on November 7, 1939, to elect the Chief Judge of the NewYork Court of Appeals . Besides, an amendment to the State Constitution proposed to legalize Parimutuel betting on horse race tracks, and was accepted. History In 1939, there was only one state officer to be elected statewide The Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, to succeed Frederick E. Crane , who would reach the constitutional age limit at the end of the year. The revised State Constitution of 1938, ratified by the electorate the previous year, increased the term in the NewYork State Assembly to two years, so that there were no assembly elections anymore in odd numbered years. The United States Democratic Party Democratic State Committee met on September 27, and nominated associate judge Irving Lehman for Chief Judge. ref http select.nytimes.com gst abstract.html?res F10613FD3F5514758DDDA10A94D1405B898FF1D3 DEMOCRATS VOTE BENCH NOMINATION TO JUDGE LEHMAN in NYT on September 28, 1939 subscription required ref The American Labor Party American Labor State Committee met on September 30 and endorsed the Democratic nominee Irving Lehman. ref http select.nytimes.com gst abstract.html?res FA0C17FC3C5A177A93C3A9178BD95F4D8385F9 JUDGE LEHMAN GETS LABOR NOMINATION in NYT on October 1, 1939 subscription required ref The United States Republican Party Republican State Committee met on October 3, and endorsed the Democratic and American Labor nominee Irving Lehman. ref http ... It is the only Mystery fiction mystery she wrote under that name. Plot summary Mrs. Daisy Tower is 67, the widow of a former governor, and for the last year has undergone the untender attentions of her nephew Egleston and his overbearing wife Elfrida during her convalescence from pneumonia and a broken hip. That might explain why she stows away in a laundry truck headed for Boston, but it doesn t really explain how she finds herself confronting a dead body aboard the private train of art collector Conrad Cassell, en route to the NewYorkWorld s Fair. She and her fellow passengers find themselves in a screwball comedy fix, set against the pageantry of opening day under the shadow of the Fair s spectacular trylon . Daisy must not only identify the corpse and the murderer, but save the Fair from destruction by a maniac and find a way to get Egleston and Elfrida out of her hair.
