    The 1944 Republican National Convention was held in Chicago, Illinois , from June 26 to 28, 1944. It nominated Thomas Dewey Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York for President and John Bricker Governor John Bricker of Ohio for Vice President. When the convention opened, Governor Dewey was the front runner for the nomination. Former presidential candidate Wendell Wilkie again vied for the nomination, but when he lost the Wisconsin primary, the lack of support from the Republican Party United States Republican Party became evident. Dewey was nominated on the first ballot. He became the first Republican candidate to accept his party s nomination in person at the convention. The convention resulted in the re nomination of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice President John Nance Garner . Change in Rules Prior to 1936, the rule for nominating candidates for President of the United States President and Vice President of the United States Vice President required a two thirds vote of the delegates. However, this rule was abolished at the 1936 Democratic Convention and conventioneers adopted a rule which provided that a majority could nominate. This would allow for candidates to more easily be nominated and would thus produce less balloting. It also began to diminish the Southern United States South s clout at the convention, making it easier for Democrats to begin adopting civil rights and other liberal ideas into their party platform platforms .
