This film was an attempt to recapture the ensemble style of films such as Broadway Melody of 1936 by showcasing a number of top musical and comedy acts of the day, in a film linked together by a loose storyline. Sensations of 1945 stars dancer Eleanor Powell and Dennis O Keefe as two rival publicists who fall in love, but the film s main purpose is to showcase a variety of different acts, ranging from tightrope walking to comedy to Powell s athletic tap dancing. This film is notable for several reasons. It was Powell s first and only non Metro Goldwyn Mayer MGM film after becoming a star at MGM nearly a decade earlier it was also her final starring role in a film, after which she would only make a cameo in MGM s Duchess of Idaho in 1950 and some unused footage of her would appear in a 1946 MGM compilation, The Great Morgan . April Ilona Karmel and Henia Karmel , sisters from the Krak w Ghetto and together Polish Jewish prisoners of the Nazis, are on a forced death march when Germans in tanks crush them and then shove them, still living, into a mass grave. Soon after, a group of prisoners passes them, including a cousin of theirs. Henia writes in 1947, these poems are real, not just scribblings. they came about when I was still creating myself, experiencing the pain of separation. How I could have survived, you might ask? File TINA.jpg 300px thumb The graffiti that inspired the name of the TINA festivals This Is Not Art is a national festival of new media and arts organised in Newcastle, New South Wales , Australia each year over the October long weekend. Since its humble beginnings in 1998, it has become one of the leading arts festivals in Australia dedicated to the work and ideas of communities not included in other major Australian arts festivals. The program includes the festivals Electrofringe , the National Young Writers Festival , Critical Animals , Sound Summit the Crack Theatre Festival and other projects. Naming This Is Not Art takes its name from a prominent piece of graffiti on what was Newcastle s tallest building, Latec House now completely refurbished and converted to apartments , which had been derelict for several decades. The name also refers to the content of the event, which is outside the ambit of traditional Australian arts festivals. History This Is Not Art evolved from the National Young Writers Festival and National Student Media Conference which were established in Newcastle in September 1998. In 1999, The National Young Writers Festival combined with the Electrofringe Festival which had previously been an independently organised part of the now defunct Newcastle Fringe Festival and moved to the October long weekend.
