Orphan date February 2009 Image Jook Walraven.jpg thumb Jook Walraven right in his lab at the Van der Waals Zeeman Institute Joannes Theodorus Maria Jook Walraven born August 20, 1947, Amsterdam is a Dutch experimental physicist at the Van der Waals Zeeman Institute for experimental physics in Amsterdam. From 1967 he studied physics at the University of Amsterdam. Both his doctoral research and PhD research was with Isaac Silvera, on the subject of Bose Einstein Condensation . Because of the difficulty of his research subject, his promotion took six years instead of four. Citation needed date March 2011 The aim of his PhD research was to make a gas of atomic hydrogen, which could become the world s first quantum gas . This might then be a suitable candidate for a Bose Einstein condensate BEC . In order to achieve this state, the gas of atomic hydrogen would have to be cooled to only a few kelvin s, without recombining to molecular hydrogen. Jook Walraven developed a method of evaporative cooling a tank was filled with a gas of atomic hydrogen, from which the hottest fastest atoms were removed. This resulted in a lower temperature of the whole gas. To keep the atomic hydrogen from forming hydrogen molecules, the atoms were spin polarized by a 7 tesla unit tesla magnet. In a few years, Silvera and Walraven had achieved the first quantum gas. ref citation last Greytak first Thomas J. chapter Prospects for Bose Einstein condensation in magnetically trapped atomic hydrogen title Bose ... cooling in combination with laser cooling . Walraven II van Brederode 8 January 1462 14 January 1531 was Lord of van Brederode Brederode , Vianen , Ameide , Bailiff of Hagestein and Burgrave of Utrecht city Utrecht . Life He was the son of Reinoud II van Brederode and Yolanda de Lalaing. When he was three years old his father named him Bailiff of Hagestein. Just like his father Reinoud II and his uncle Gijsbrecht van Brederode , he was captured by Bishop David of Burgundy in 1470, but he managed to escape with some assistance and fled to Castle Batenstein . On 16 October 1473 he succeeded his father as the 10th Lord of Brederode. Walraven s succession ceremony was interrupted by his half brothers, who were illegitimate however, leaving Walraven as the rightful successor. In 1486 he was knighted by Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian of Austria , and took a place in Maximilian s council. After the death of Maximilian, Walraven searched for a way to reinstate the rule of the Hook and Cod wars Hook faction , which would lead to a new war. After several years, Walraven defected to the opposing faction, which would prove to be a good decision. Family Walraven married firstly with the non noble Geertruida van Alphen, and had several bastard children with her, who would later make claims to the lordship of Brederode. In 1492 Walraven married the noble Margaretha van Kloetinge van Borselen. She died in 1507, after which he married Anna van Nieuwenaar on 11 May 1508. In the same year he participated in the Siege of Gorinchem 1402 siege of Gorinchem , where he was taken captive.
