It emerged in New York City , as a result of the mixture of the styles of predominantly white jazz musicians and black bebop musicians, and it dominated jazz in the first half of the 1950s. The starting point were a series of single music singles on Capitol Records in 1949 and 1950 of a Nonet music nonet led by trumpeter Miles Davis , collected and released first on a ten inch and later a twelve inch as the Birth of the Cool . Cool jazz recordings by Chet Baker , Dave Brubeck , Bill Evans , Gil Evans , Stan Getz and the Modern Jazz Quartet usually have a lighter sound which avoided the aggressive tempos and harmonic abstraction of bebop. Cool jazz later became strongly identified with the West Coast jazz scene, but also had a particular resonance in Europe, especially Scandinavia, with emergence of such major figures as baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin and pianist Bengt Hallberg . The theoretical underpinnings of cool jazz were set out by the blind Chicago ... and piano playing, developed in the mid 1950s, partly in response to the vogue for cool jazz in the early 1950s. Refimprove date January 2008 During the 1950s, a couple of relatively new developments changed the world World War II had only been over for five years when the decade of the 50s began, and television was beginning to make a major impact internationally. In boxing , changes connected to these developments could be seen too, as boxers who fought at the 1940s conflict returned to their homes and many of them were back in the ring. Television producers were in love with sports, which provided the viewer with an opportunity to observe sporting events live, and boxing was not the exception to the rules many television networks began to feature fights live during the weekends, and the Gillette Friday Night Fights proved to be one of the most popular boxing television series in American history. The dawn of the Jet engine jet fixed wing aircraft airplane era in 1958 also helped boxing expand worldwide with airplanes flying faster and more frequently between cities far away from each other, more and more world title fights began to be fought outside the United States . Vic Toweel became South Africa s first world boxing champion, Jimmy Carruthers did the same for Australia , Pascual P rez boxing Pascual P rez was the first from Argentina , Yoshio Shirai who was beaten by P rez , won Japan s first world title, and Hogan Bassey won the first belt for Nigeria . Jersey Joe Walcott the oldest heavyweight champion until George Foreman regained the title in 1994 , Archie Moore broke the all time knockout record as well as the record for the oldest champion, at 48, for any division, Ezzard Charles proved to be a reliable substitute for Joe Louis as heavyweight champ, and Floyd ... Bowman was the only major sports card manufacturer in 1950. The monopoly was short lived, as Topps would begin producing cards in 1951. The rivalry lasted for five years as Bowman was bought out by Topps in 1956. The following provides a brief summary of trading card sets issued during the 1950s by the Bowman Gum Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Baseball In 1950, Bowman printed a total of 200 million baseball cards, and had revenues of one million dollars. ref Mint Condition How Baseball Cards Became an American Obsession, p. 92, Dave Jamieson, 2010, Atlantic Monthly Press, imprint of Grove Atlantic Inc., New York, NY, ISBN 978 0 8021 1939 1 ref 1950 1950 was the only year in which Bowman had a monopoly on baseball cards there were no other national issues released that year. This set numbered 252 cards total. As with the 1949 Bowman set, the cards measured 2 by 2 , quite a bit smaller than what is now considered the standard size for baseball cards. The card fronts feature hand painted color reproductions of actual photographs. As Bowman did not have any competition in 1950, most major stars of the era are represented in this set, including Ted Williams . However, the set lacks big name rookie cards, which has hurt its collectible value. Unlike most vintage sets, in which the high number cards are usually harder to find and thus more valuable , the 1950 set is actually harder to find in the low numbers, cards 1 72.
