LeMans Races Previous 1954 Current 1955 Next 1956 The 1955 24 Hours of LeMans was the 23rd 24 Hours of LeMans Grand Prix of Endurance , and took place on June 11 and 12, 1955. It was also the fourth round of the 1955 World Sportscar Championship . This race saw the 1955LeMansdisaster with the death of 83 spectators and the injuring of over 100 more when Pierre Levegh s Mercedes Benz 300 SLR was involved in an accident and flew into the crowd, killing the driver as well. After the incident, the other two Mercedes vehicles in the race were withdrawn in leading position . This accident, the most catastrophic in motorsport history, led to great changes in the measures taken to ensure the safety of drivers and spectators. Its fallout also led to many car manufacturers pulling out of motorsport including Mercedes , and even the temporary outlawing of circuit racing in several countries. The LeMans Legend is a vintage sports car racing sports car race held during the 24 Hours of LeMans festivities. Created in 2001, it was created by the Motor Racing Legends group, and supported by the Automobile Club de l Ouest ACO , organizers of the 24 Hours of LeMans. Unlike other vintage events, these races only allow cars which previously ran at LeMans. Specific eras of cars are run each year, with the era changing each year as deemed by the organizers. Cars run the full Circuit de la Sarthe just as they had originally done when they first raced, and are fully timed and scored based on their classes. Famous LeMans drivers have often driven in the event, driving cars they had previously run. Stirling Moss was among the notables in recent years, while amateur drivers mostly make up the rest of the field. Dr. Ulrich Bez , current president of Aston Martin , has also raced in the event, driving the 24hLM 1959 winning Aston Martin DBR1 DBR1 in 2007. A record 61 cars were seen in the event in 2007. The LeMans Classic is a biennial vintage sports car racing sports car event held on the grounds of the 24 Hours of LeMans . It began in 2002 and runs every two years in July on the full 13.65 km circuit also used for the annual modern day 24 Hours of LeMans. The LeMans Classic event of 2002 was the first time since 1923 that the full 24 hour Circuit, part of which is public road the rest of the year, was closed specifically for an event other than the annual running of the 24 heures du Mans with contemporary sportcars and prototypes, thus allowing car owners and gentleman drivers to experience what it must have been to race these cars on this circuit. The event consists of a series of races for cars which have competed at the 24 Hours of LeMans or for similar cars of the same model. Only cars from prior to 1979 are allowed, with all cars being broken into six different eras. To compete in the races a driver must own an FIA International Competition licence, meaning the drivers are of a professional level.
