  1. Interplate earthquake

Earthquakes Unreferenced date May 2007 An interplate earthquake is an earthquake that occurs at the boundary between two tectonic plate s. If one plate is trying to move past the other, they will be locked until sufficient stress builds up to cause the plates to slip relative to each other. The slipping process creates an earthquake with land deformations and resulting seismic wave s which travel through the Earth and along the Earth s surface. Relative plate motion can be lateral as along a transform fault boundary or vertical if along a convergent subduction boundary or a rift geology rift at a divergent boundary. At a subduction boundary the motion is due to one plate slipping beneath the other plate resulting in an interplate thrust or megathrust earthquake . Some areas of the world that are particularly prone to such events include the west coast of North America especially California and Alaska , the northeastern Mediterranean region Greece , Italy , and Turkey in particular , Iran , New Zealand , Indonesia , Japan , and parts of China . 1. Earthquake simulation

main Earthquake engineering Image Shaking NDC.jpg thumb right Shake table destructive testing of a model non ductile 6 storey building Earthquake simulation applies a real or simulated vibrational input to a structure that possesses the essential features of a real seismic event. Earthquake simulations are generally performed to study the effects of earthquakes on man made engineered structures, or on natural features which may present a hazard during an earthquake. Dynamic experiments on building and non building structure s may be physical &ndash as with Earthquake shaking table shake table testing &ndash or virtual based on computer simulation . In all cases, to verify a structure s expected seismic performance , researchers prefer to deal with so called real time histories though the last cannot be real for a hypothetical earthquake specified by either a building code or by some particular research requirements. Shake table testing The best way to do it Fact date January 2009 is to put the structure on a earthquake shaking table shake table that simulates the seismic loading and watch what may happen next if you have no time to stand out in the field and wait for a real earthquake to strike, of course . Earthquake swarms are events where a local area experiences sequences of many earthquake s striking in a relatively short period of time. 1. Earthquake Synod

The Earthquake Synod was an English synod that took place on May 21, 1382 in Blackfriars, London Blackfriars area, London , Kingdom of England . William Courtenay , the Archbishop of Canterbury , convened the synod to address the emerging Lollard thinkers challenging the church. In particular, the synod condemned John Wycliffe s twenty four theses, although many had already been condemned as heresy by a synod at St. Paul s Cathedral in February 1377. The synod also issued teachings on the doctrine of transubstantiation and friar s. The synod got its name from the fact that an earthquake shook the city of London during its meetings. ref Earthquake Synod. In Cross, F. L. and E. A. Livingstone, eds. 1. Earthquake scenario

Main Earthquake engineering Earthquake scenario is a planning tool to determine the appropriate emergency responses or building systems in seismic risk areas. It uses the basics of seismic hazard studies, but usually places a set earthquake on a specific fault, most likely near a high population area. Most scenarios relate directly to urban seismic risk , and seismic risk in general. Some earthquake scenarios follow some of the latest methodologies from the nuclear industry, namely a Seismic Margin Assessment SMA ref http www.idom.es ada Download Paper 3 01.PDF ref . In the process, a Review Level Earthquake RLE is chosen that challenges the system, has a reasonable probability, and is not totally overwhelming. 1. Earthquake map

In hyperbolic geometry , an earthquake map is a method of changing one hyperbolic manifold into another, introduced by harvs txt authorlink William Thurston first William last Thurston year 1986 . Earthquake maps Given a simple geodesic on an oriented hyperbolic manifold and a real number t , one can cut the manifold along the geodesic, slide the edges a distance t to the left, and glue them back. This gives a new hyperbolic manifold, and the possibly discontinuous map between them is an example of a left earthquake. More generally one can do the same construction with a finite number of disjoint simple geodesics, each with a real number attached to them. The result is called a simple earthquake. An earthquake is roughly a sort of limit of simple earthquakes, where one has an infinite number of geodesics, and instead of attaching a positive real number to each geodesic one puts a measure on them. A geodesic lamination is of a hyperbolic surface is a closed subset with a foliation by geodesics. A left earthquake E consists of a map between copies of the hyperbolic plane with geodesic laminations, that is an isometry from each stratum of the foliation to a stratum. Moreover if A and B are two strata then E su b A p &minus 1 E su b B p is a hyperbolic transformation whose axis separates A and B and which translates to the left, where E sub A sub is the isometry of the whole plane that restricts to E on A , and likewise for B . Earthquake theorem Thurston s earthquake theorem states that for any two points x , y of Teichm ller space there is a unique left earthquake from x to y . It was proved by William Thurston in a course in Princeton in 1976 1977, but at the time he did not publish it, and the first published statement and proof was given by harvtxt Kerckhoff 1983 , who used it to solve the Nielsen realization problem .
