  1. State of Rebellion

Unreferenced date April 2009 In the Philippines , a state of rebellion is a government declaration that suspends a number of civil right s for a short period of time. It is a form of martial law that allows a government to suppress protest, detain and arrest people, search private property, read private mail, and listen to phone conversations using wiretaps all without legal Warrant law warrant s. It is mainly used to stop an attempted Coup d etat coup . It differs from martial law, in that the military does not take over functions the government, although the military is often called to protect the government from rebels. Most recently, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines declared a state of rebellion in July 2003 after a coup attempt by supporters of the former President, Joseph Estrada . That was the second time she had used the state of rebellion to quash opposition. The term state of rebellion is a euphemism favored by those in power in the Philippines because former dictator Ferdinand Marcos ruled under martial law for nine years. Under his rule, martial law was used as an excuse for torture and other human rights abuses. Thus a new term was coined to grant the President similar powers without unwanted comparisons to Marcos. 1. Rebellion (novel)

Infobox book name Rebellion image image caption author Joseph Roth title orig Die Rebellion translator Michael Hofmann country Austria language German publisher Vorw rts br Die Schmiede pub date 27 July 1924 english pub date 1999 pages 137 Rebellion lang de Die Rebellion is a 1924 novel by the Austrian writer Joseph Roth . It tells the story of a war veteran who has become a street musician after losing one leg. The novel was published in the newspaper Vorw rts from 27 July to 29 August 1924. It has been adapted for television twice in 1962 by Wolfgang Staudte , and in 1993 by Michael Haneke . Reception Nicholas Lezard of The Guardian reviewed the book in 2000 Roth s tale has that very European, straightforward, fairy tale logic that makes everything both inevitable yet strangely nightmarish. You wouldn t be far wrong to think of Roth as occupying the fourth corner of a square whose other apices are Franz Kafka Kafka , Robert Musil Musil and Stefan Zweig . Lezard continued At one or two points the novel leaps into strange, almost magical realist territory not a term I like much, but it suggests the sense of dreamlike dislocation you feel from time to time while reading. This portrait of one of the shards of a splintering society is deceptively simple, but will haunt you for a long time afterwards. ref Cite web last Lezard first Nicholas authorlink Nicholas Lezard date 2000 07 15 url http www.guardian.co.uk books 2000 jul 15 classics.nicholaslezard title In his own corner work The Guardian accessdate 2012 02 21 ref See also 1924 in literature Austrian literature References reflist External links http gutenberg.spiegel.de buch 4260 1 Rebellion at Projekt Gutenberg DE De icon Joseph Roth Category 1924 novels Category Austrian novels Category German language novels Category Novels by Joseph Roth Category Novels first published in serial form 1920s novel stub de Die Rebellion it La ribellione ...   more details
