The service is currently contracted to Metrobus Go Ahead Group Metrobus . History Route 293 was begun in April 1970, replacing London Buses route 93 route 93 between North Cheam and Epsom . At the time, the service ran beyond Morden to South Wimbledon and Wimbledon railway station in the peak hours, and served Epsom railway station rather than the Epsom General Hospital General Hospital . In 1973, the route was converted to double deck operation. In 1982, it was moved from London General Merton Merton to London General Sutton Sutton garage. A year after that the routing was changed to serve Hackbridge instead of Wimbledon, London Wimbledon . Two years later, in April 1985, the service was swapped back to London General Merton Merton garage. In February 1989, operation was transferred to London County South West , and then in 1990, the route was withdrawn from Epsom railway station Epsom station and extended to Merton Abbey, London Merton Abbey Savacentre . It was notable for seeing the loss to the Kriegsmarine KM of GS U 47 1938 2 , with her commander Kapitanleutnant KL G nther Prien , the person responsible for the sinking of HMS Royal Oak 08 6 two years previously. Prelude OB 293 was a west bound convoy of 37 ships, either in ballast or carrying trade goods, and sailed from Liverpool on 2 March 1941 bound for ports in North America . It was escorted by an escort group of two destroyer s, HMS Wolverine and HMS Verity , and two corvette s, HMS Arbutus and HMS Camellia . They were led by LtCdr Rowlands of Wolverine , which would stay with them till they left the Western Approaches . At this stage of the campaign escort groups were too scarce to provide end to end cover . On 6 March 1941 the convoy was sighted by U 47 commanded by Prien. After sending a sighting report he set to shadowing the convoy, being joined throughout the day by three other boats.
