The Wreath cent was an United States American Large cent U.S. coin large cent . It was the second design type, following the Chain cent in 1793 . It was produced only during that year. Obverse design The Obverse and reverse obverse design consisted of a stylized Liberty head with flowing hair. The inscription code LIBERTY code appeared above the portrait. Below it was a three leaved sprig and the date. The design of the Liberty head was modified somewhat from that of the Chain cent to address public criticism. Reverse design The Obverse and reverse reverse s central design figure, for which the coin is named, was a wreath . The words code ONE CENT code appeared within the wreath, and the corresponding fraction code 1 100 code appeared beneath it. Along the outer edge was inscribed code UNITED STATES OF AMERICA code . A decorative beaded border was added along the rim. Varieties Approximately 63,353 Wreath cents were struck. Early specimens featured a stylized vine bars design on the edges of the planchet , which was identical to that of the earlier Chain cent. Later on, this was changed to a lettered edge reading code ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR code . He was primarily a mineralogist , metallurgist , and chemist , but also worked as a physician and was a member of a number of learned societies. He wrote four books on mineralogy and chemicals. In 1837 , to alleviate the need for small change during the Hard Times, Feuchtwanger created tokens made of argentan commonly known as Nickel Silver German Silver , an alloy made of copper, nickel, zinc, tin and trace metals. The Liberty Cap Large Cent was a type of Large cent United States coin large cent struck by the United States Mint from 1793 until 1796, when it was replaced by the Draped bust Draped Bust large cent . History The Liberty Cap large cent was issued by the Mint from 1793 to 1796. The Mint created this type of cent in an attempt to satisfy the public objections to the Chain cent and Wreath cent . It appears to have been a little more successful than its precedents, as it was continued into 1796, unlike the previous two issues, which were issued for one year only. In 1795, the planchets became too thin for the use of edge lettering on the coins, so coins from late 1795 onward have no edge lettering. Sources R.S. The coin was designed by James B. Longacre . The Flying Eagle was the first small sized cent coin minted in the US, replacing the earlier Large cent United States coin large cent . The obverse of the coin depicts an eagle in flight, a unique subject for the obverse of American coins. The reverse of the coin has the words ONE CENT surrounded by a wreath, similar to the reverse on the later Indian Head cent and Wheat cent minted until 1958. The United States Mint in Philadelphia struck about 700 Flying Eagle cents in 1856 as pattern coin pattern pieces, a way to show influential congressmen and senators what these coins would look like. The coins became popular and were soon selling for 2.00 equal to formatnum Inflation US 2 1856 r 2 today in auctions. The Mint began restriking them in 1858 and selling them to the public.
