Unreferenced date December 2009 Ramp died 825 was the second Count of Barcelona from 820 until his death. After Bera, Count of Barcelona Bera was deposed Emperor Louis the Pious gave his lands to a nobleman unconnected to the factional struggles that had developed in Gothic march Gothia . He chose the Franks Frank Ramp , who had been a faithful servant to his father Charlemagne . He had been given the responsibility of telling Louis then king of Aquitaine , of his father Charlemagne s death in Dou la Fontaine , Anjou , at the beginning of 814. Ramp governed Barcelona, Girona , and Besal with the title of Count but possibly also Margrave , the latter title was reserved only for the rulers of border counties. In 821, the Court at Aachen ordered him to attack Muslim territory, an order which he carried out in 822, ransacking land up to the river Segre . Ramp died in 825, however it was not until an assembly in Aachen in February 826 that Louis designated his successor to be Bernat of Septimania Bernard , the son of William of Gellone , Count of Toulouse , and younger brother of both Bera, the first count, and Gaucelm , Count of Emp ries and Count of Roussillon Roussillon . His short reign saw the collapse of Mercian Supremacy Mercia s supremacy over the kingdoms of the Anglo Saxon England Anglo Saxon Heptarchy . Beornwulf s ancestry is practically unknown. His father was a Mercian nobleman, ealdorman Beorhtweald died 796 . A man named Beornwulf is mentioned as having witnessed a charter of King Coenwulf of Mercia Coenwulf in 812 and another of King Ceolwulf I of Mercia Ceolwulf in 823, but his position on each of these charters suggests he was not of an exceptionally high rank. ref Frank Stenton, Anglo Saxon England 1943, 1971, 1998 Oxford paperback , page 231, note 1. ref Ceolwulf I was overthrown in 823, and Beornwulf became king. Kingdom of Powys Powys was conquered by the Mercians at about this time, but it is unclear which of the two kings was ruling when it occurred.
