A MathematicalTheory of Natural and ArtificialSelection is the title of a series of scientific paper s by the United Kingdom British population geneticist J.B.S. Haldane , published between 1924 and 1934. Haldane outlines the first mathematical models for many cases of evolution due to selection , an important concept in the modern evolutionary synthesis . Other uses Negative selection disambiguation Merge to artificialselection date July 2010 In artificialselection , negative selection is where negative, rather than positive, traits of a species are selected for evolutionary continuance. It is generally not desirable, but may be caused by man made conditions such as bad management , or like when human s eat the best plants or animals they have, leading to worse and worse stock for example, it occurred frequently in primitive beekeeping . Fact date April 2007 Another more recent example are regulations on fish and deer, where fish below a certain desired size will be set free, and deer suffering small antlers would less likely to be hunted, leading to undersized fish and small antlered deer populations the same case applies to the elephant s tusks. ref cite web title Poachers have created breed of tuskless elephant publisher The Independent date 19 June 2001 last McCarthy first Michael url http www.independent.co.uk news world asia poachers have created breed of tuskless elephant 674663.html accessdate 2010 07 11 ref ref cite web date 20 Jan 2008 publisher Telegraph last Gray first Richard title Why elephants are not so long in the tusk url http www.telegraph.co.uk science science news 3322455 Why elephants are not so long in the tusk.html accessdate 2010 07 11 ref Some proponents of Social Darwinism and eugenics argue that medicine and other technology technological , society societal , and culture cultural practices cause negative selection in humans, better known as dysgenics . Other uses Negative selection disambiguation In naturalselection , negative selection ref Loewe, L. 2008 . http www.nature.com scitable topicpage Negative Selection 1136 Negative selection . Nature Education 1 1 . ref or purifying selection is the selective removal of alleles that are Mutation Harmful mutations deleterious . This can result in stabilizing selection through the purging of deleterious variations that arise. Purging of deleterious alleles can be achieved on the population genetics level, with as little as a single point mutation being the unit of selection. In such a case, carriers of the harmful point mutation have fewer offspring each generation, reducing the frequency of the mutation in the gene pool. In the case of strong negative selection on a locus, the purging of deleterious variants will result in the occasional removal of genetic linkage linked variation, producing a decrease in the level of variation surrounding the locus under selection. The accidental purging of non deleterious alleles due to such spatial proximity to deleterious alleles is called background selection . ref Brian Charlesworth Charlesworth, B. , Morgan, M. DISPLAYTITLE NaturalSelection manuscript NaturalSelection is a manuscript written by Charles Darwin , in which he presented his theory of naturalselection and its role in biological evolution . He did not publish the work while he was alive, but wrote an abstract, titled On the Origin of Species by Means of NaturalSelection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life , which he published in 1859 . Darwin regarded NaturalSelection as his main work, while On the Origin of Species was written for a wider audience. He always intended to finish NaturalSelection , but because of frail health, the publicity and work involved in publishing six editions of On the Origin of Species , plus other research and publications, he never got around to finish it. NaturalSelection was transcribed after Darwin s death, and first published in 1975. Fisher in his 1930 book The Genetical Theory of NaturalSelection ...Ronald Fisher R. A. Fisher s so called fundamental theorem of naturalselection , although it uses some mathematical notation, is not a theorem in the mathematical sense, but an idea in population genetics which was originally stated thus The rate of increase in fitness biology fitness of any organism at any time is equal to its genetic variance in fitness at that time. ref name Fisher R.A. multiple issues unreferenced January 2011 wikify January 2011 expert January 2011 merge to Market saturation date November 2011 The Theory of Natural limits was introduced by American economist and author Tom Osenton is his 2004 book The Death of Demand Finding Growth in a Saturated Global Economy Financial Times Prentice Hall and states that every product or service has a natural consumption level that is determined after a number of years of sales and marketing investment usually around 20 25 years . In effect, a relative universe of regular users is naturally established over time after which any significant expansion of that universe becomes extraordinarily difficult. The point at which natural limits are reached is known as Innovation saturation . Statement of the theory Every product or service has a natural consumption level, said Osenton. We just don t know what it is until we launch it, distribute it, and promote it for a generation s time 20 years or more after which further investment to expand the universe beyond normal limits can be a futile exercise. Examples For example, the American weekly consumer magazine Sports Illustrated was launched in 1954 with 400,000 subscribers and grew through the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s until reaching 3.5 million subscribers in the late 1980s where it has remained ever since. With some estimates of up to 100 million sports fans in the United States, many at Time, Inc. believed that Sports Illustrated s subscription base could have been much higher. However, after many years of investment, the sportsweekly s natural and most profitable consumption level was reached where it has remained for more than 20 years.
