merge A posteriori languages date April 2011 This is the article about constructed languages. For other uses of the term a priori, see a priori . An a priori language is any constructed language whose vocabulary is not based on existing languages, unlike a posteriori languages a posteriori constructed languages. Examples of a priori languages include Ro language Ro , Solresol , Mirad , Klingon language Klingon , and Na vi language Na vi . By contrast, a posteriori languages are ones whose vocabulary is based on existing languages, either as a variation of one language e.g., Latino sine flexione or as a mixture of various languages. Some a priori languages are designed to be international auxiliary language s that remove what could be considered an unfair learning advantage for native speakers of a source language that would otherwise exist for a posteriori languages. Some a priori languages try to categorize their vocabulary, either to express an underlying philosophy or to make it easier to recognize new vocabulary. These are also known as philosophical language philosophical or taxonomic languages . References Alan Libert, A Priori Artificial Languages Languages of the World 24. Munich Lincom Europa, 2000 . The a posteriori languages can be divided into three categories Simplified ethnic languages, like Basic English or Latino sine flexione Naturalistic languages, i.e. closest to the real ethnic languages most often Latin or Romance languages , like Occidental language or Interlingua Autonomous schematic languages, in which grammar is a priori but vocabulary is a posteriori , like Esperanto or, to some extent, Volap k . 1. A priori probability

DISPLAYTITLE A priori probability The term a priori probability is used in distinguishing the ways in which values for probabilities can be obtained. In particular, an a priori probability is derived purely by deductive reasoning . ref Mood A.M., Graybill F.A., Boes D.C. 1974 Introduction to the Theory of Statistics 3rd Edition . McGraw Hill. Section 2.2 http www.colorado.edu Economics morey 7818 7818readings.html available online ref One way of deriving a priori probabilities is the principle of indifference , which has the character of saying that, if there are N mutually exclusive and exhaustive events and if they are equally likely, then the probability of a given event occurring is 1 N . Similarly the probability of one of a given collection of K events is K N . One disadvantage of defining probabilities in the above way is that it applies only to finite collections of events. In Bayesian inference , a priori probabilities are known as prior probability Uninformative priors uninformative priors or objective priors note that prior probability is a broader concept. 1. A priori estimate

DISPLAYTITLE A priori estimate In the theory of partial differential equation s, an a priori estimate also called an apriori estimate or a priori bound is an estimate for the size of a solution or its derivatives of a partial differential equation. A priori is Latin for from before and refers to the fact that the estimate for the solution is derived before the solution is known to exist. One reason for their importance is that if one can prove an a priori estimate for solutions of a differential equation, then it is often possible to prove that solutions exist using the continuity method or a fixed point theorem . A priori estimates were introduced and named by harvs txt authorlink Sergei Natanovich Bernstein first Sergei Natanovich last Bernstein year 1906 year2 1910 , who used them to prove existence of solutions to second order nonlinear elliptic equations in the plane. Some other early influential examples of a priori estimates include the Schauder estimates given by harvs txt last Schauder year1 1934 year2 1937 , and the estimates given by De Giorgi and Nash for second order elliptic or parabolic equations in many variables in their solution to Hilbert s nineteenth problem . 1. Maximum a posteriori estimation

Bayesian statistics In Bayesian statistics , a maximum a posteriori probability MAP estimate is a mode statistics mode of the posterior distribution . The MAP can be used to obtain a point estimation point estimate of an unobserved quantity on the basis of empirical data. It is closely related to Ronald Fisher Fisher s method of maximum likelihood ML , but employs an augmented optimization mathematics optimization objective which incorporates a prior distribution over the quantity one wants to estimate. MAP estimation can therefore be seen as a regularization mathematics regularization of ML estimation. Description Assume that we want to estimate an unobserved population parameter math theta math on the basis of observations math x math . Let math f math be the sampling distribution of math x math , so that math f x theta math is the probability of math x math when the underlying population parameter is math theta math . Then the function math theta mapsto f x theta math is known as the likelihood function and the estimate math hat theta mathrm ML x underset theta operatorname arg ,max f x theta math is the maximum likelihood estimate of math theta math . Now assume that a prior distribution math g math over math theta math exists. This allows us to treat math theta math as a random variable as in Bayesian statistics . 1. Intelligibility (philosophy)

Other uses Intelligibility disambiguation Intelligibility In philosophy, intelligibility is what can be comprehended by the human mind . The intelligible method is thought thinking itself, or the human mind reflecting. Plato referred to the intelligible realm of mathematics , Intelligible form forms , first principles , logical Deductive reasoning deduction , and the dialectical method . The intelligible realm of thought thinking about thought does not necessarily require any visual images, sensual impressions, and material causes for the contents of mind. Descartes referred to this method of thought thinking about itself, without the possible illusions of the senses. Kant made similar claims about A priori and a posteriori a priori knowledge. A priori knowledge is claimed to be independent of the content of experience. Usage The object philosophy objects or concepts that have intelligibility may be called intelligible . There may be a distinction between everything that is intelligible and everything that is visible, called the intelligible world and the visible world in e.g. the analogy of the divided line . 1. Will (philosophy)

TOC right Will , in Western philosophy philosophical discussions, consonant with a common English usage, refers to a property of the mind, and an attribute of acts intention ally performed. Actions made according to a person s will are called willing or voluntary and sometimes pejoratively willful . In general, Will does not refer to one particular or most preferred desire but rather to the general capacity to have such desiderata and act decisively to achieve them, according to whatever criteria the willing agent applies. The will is in turn important within philosophy because a person s will is one of the most distinct parts of their mind , along with reason and nous understanding . that A priori and a posteriori philosophy a priori knowledge was possible in the fields of mathematics ...histphil 17th century philosophy in the Western world is generally regarded as being the start of modern philosophy , and a departure from the Medieval philosophy medieval approach , especially Scholasticism . Early 17th century philosophy is often called the Age of Reason or Age of Rationalism and is considered to succeed the Renaissance philosophy era and precede the Age of Enlightenment . Europe In the West, 17th century philosophy is usually taken to start with the work of Ren Descartes , who set much of the agenda as well as much of the methodology for those who came after him. 1. Intuition (philosophy)

refimprove date May 2008 Intuition is A priori and a posteriori a priori knowledge or experiential belief characterized by its immediacy. Beyond this, the nature of intuition is debated. Roughly speaking, there are two main views. They are Intuitions are a priori. This view holds that distinctions are to be made between various sorts of intuition, roughly corresponding to their subject matter see George Bealer . The only intuitions that are relevant in analytic philosophy are rational intuitions. These are intellectual seemings that something is necessarily the case. They are directed exclusively towards statements that make some kind of necessity claim. For example, a rational intuition is what occurs when it seems to us that a mathematical statement e.g. 2 2 4 must be true. Intuitions as this view characterizes them are to be distinguished from beliefs , since we can hold beliefs which are not intuitive, or have intuitions for propositions that we know to be false. Intuitions are a species of belief, and based ultimately in experience. This view holds that intuitions are not especially different from beliefs, although they appear subjectively to be more unrevisable than other beliefs. Unlike the previous view, these intuitions are liable to differ between social groups.
