Brief history The American Association of Physics Teachers was founded on December 31, 1930, when forty five physicists held a meeting during the joint American Physical Society APS AAAS meeting in Cleveland specifically for that purpose. The AAPT became a founding member of the American Institute of Physics after the other founding members were convinced of the stability of the AAPT itself after a new constitution for the AAPT was agreed upon. Contests The AAPT sponsors a number of competitions. The Physics Bowl , Six Flags roller coaster contest, and the US Physics Team are just a few. The US physics team is determined by two preliminary exams and a week and a half long boot camp. Each year, five members are selected to compete against dozens of countries in the International Physics Olympiad IPHO .     Homer Levi Dodge was the Chair of the Department of Physics, Dean of the Graduate school, and founder of the Oklahoma Research Institute, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma . In 1919 Dodge became chairman of the Physics Department at the University of Oklahoma , and in 1926 he became dean of the graduate school. He was president of the Board of Trustees for the School of Religion from 1927 to 1944. At the December 1930 meeting of the American Physical Society , Dodge helped to organize the American Association of Physics Teachers AAPT . He was elected the first President of the AAPT. In 1941, he organized the Oklahoma Research Institute and became its first director. From 1942 to 1944, he took a leave of absence from the University of Oklahoma to serve as director of the Office of Scientific Personnel of the United States National Research Council National Research Council .     The Contemporary Physics Education Project , CPEP , was formed in 1987. The group of research physicist s, college teacher s, and high school teachers grew out of the Academic conference Conference on the Teaching of Modern Physics held at Fermilab in 1986. Its first effort aimed to supply a chart for particle physics teaching that would rival the Periodic Table of the Chemical element elements . Teach. 26, 556 1988 . ref CPEP has created four charts emphasizing contemporary aspects of physics research Elementary particle particles and interactions Nuclear fusion fusion and plasma physics nuclear science and cosmology . Over a quarter of a million of these charts have been distributed. The group has created website support for teaching for each of the charts available through the website www.cpepweb.org . Miscellaneous CPEP, recently founded at the University of Michigan, is back and in full effect. I don t know anything about this CPEP , but it not the subject of this article. The CPEP of this article was founded by a project of the American Association of Physics Teachers AAPT , which was a conference at Fermilab in 1986 entitled Quarks, Quasars, and Quandaries.
