AARNet or Australian Academic and Research Network offers Internet services to the Australia n education and research communities and their research partners. AARNet is a not for profit company limited by shares. The shareholders are 37 Australian universities and the CSIRO Australia. AARNet s services other than basic Internet connectivity include the mirror computing mirror service at http mirror.aarnet.edu.au , and an tunnel broker IPv6 tunnel broker . History AARNet was initially created between educational facilities such as the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Melbourne in Melbourne . AARNet was formed in 1989 by the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee AVCC . The TransPAC2 Network is a National Science Foundation funded high speed international circuit connecting research and education networks in the Asia Pacific region to those in the US. It is the 5 year continuation of the TransPAC project. TransPAC2 is part of the NSF s International Research Network Connections IRNC program. Image Tpacweb.jpg thumb 200px TransPAC2 s Network Operations Center is located in the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex in Indianapolis, IN on the IUPUI campus. The NOC operates 24 7 under the supervision of the Global Research NOC at IUPUI. Network Topology The TransPAC2 network is currently engineered as a single OC 192 circuit provided by KDDI America. It connects to the APAN network in Tokyo and to a TransPAC2 managed router in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles router computing router , run in the TransPAC2 AS 22388 , maintains a 10GigE connection to the CENIC managed Pacific Wave ethernet switch. This connection enables direct peering with the Internet2 Abilene Network , National LambdaRail and other high speed networks on the west coast. Acceptable Use The TransPAC2 network is currently limited to the networks carried by other Research and Education network aggregators. In the Pacific region, this list includes APAN, TEIN2, and AARNet . In North America, the primary connection is via the Internet2 Abilene network, though TransPAC2 peers with other R&E networks at the Pacific Wave Exchange Point. Refimprove date March 2010 In computer networking , jumbo frames are Ethernet frame s with more than 1500 bytes of payload. Conventionally, jumbo frames can carry up to 9000 bytes of payload, but variations exist and some care must be taken when using the term. Many Gigabit Ethernet switches and Gigabit Ethernet network interface cards support jumbo frames. Some Fast Ethernet switches and Fast Ethernet network interface cards also support jumbo frames. ref name Cisco24048 cite web url http www.cisco.com en US products hw switches ps700 products configuration example09186a008010edab.shtml title Jumbo Giant Frame Support on Catalyst Switches Configuration Example quote Catalyst 3750 3560 Series switches support an MTU of 1998 bytes for all 10 100 interfaces publisher Cisco accessdate 2011 08 22 ref Most national research and education networks such as Internet2 NLR, ESnet , G ANT , and AARNet support jumbo frames, but most commercial Internet service providers do not. Citation needed date May 2010 Inception With the original 1500 byte payload size for Ethernet frames, if one receives a corrupted packet, only 1500 bytes plus 18 bytes for the frame header and other overhead must be re sent to correct the error. However, each frame requires that the network hardware and software process it. If the frame size is increased, a certain large amount of data can be transferred with less effort, reducing CPU utilization mostly due to interrupt reduction and increasing throughput by reducing the number of frames needing to be processed and reducing the total overhead byte count of all the frames sent. Jumbo frames gained initial prominence when Alteon WebSystems introduced them in their ACEnic Gigabit Ethernet adapters. Many other vendors also adopted the size however, they did not become part of the official IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. ref cite news title Alteon still stumping for Jumbo Frames author Jeff Caruso work Network World date October 22, 1998 url http www.networkwor ... more details
