He was born in Toronto , the second son of a Russian born father and a Scottish born mother, he studied at the Central Technical School . During his teens, he attended classes at the Children s Art Centre of the Art Gallery of Ontario , where he was encouraged by such artists as Arthur Lismer , Erma Sutcliffe , Dorothy Medhurst , and A. Y. Jackson . He later studied at the Acad mie Julian . He enlisted in the RCAF in October, 1942, and was made a Flight Lieutenant . He was appointed an official war artist in December, 1944, assigned to depict airborne operations over north west Europe . After the war, he was an instructor at the Ontario College of Art . In 1958, he joined the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts . In 1979, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada . It is oval shaped with a length of 35  km and maximum width of 6  km. The Assalaya sugar factory as well as the city of Rabak are located on the east, in the west is Kosti city and harbor. The population of the island work in agriculture, herding, fishing, and handicrafts such as leather and furniture industry and others. On the island there are a number of schools, institutes and a University. Aljazeera Aba is associated with Al Mahdia revolution, where Al Mahdi stayed ten years from 1871 to 1881. In this period he had built a mosque, near the Nile. He worshiped there in a place close to the Nile. He also taught people the Koran and encouraged them for revolution. After the battle of Abad, he left the west where he continued his revolution against the Turks. Aljazeera Aba is still associated with the family of Al Mahdi and they have a palace there. Aljazeera Aba is still considered to be the most important stronghold of Ansar Sudan Al Ansar , the supporters of Al Mahdi, who are supporters the largest religious sector in Sudan. In 1970 armed confrontations took place between former president Jaafar Nimeiri Jaafar Nimeiri s regime and opposition at the Al Jazeera Aba locality.
