Lully operas Acis et Galat e Acis and Galatea is an opera by Jean Baptiste Lully . Unlike most of his operas, which are designated trag dies en musique , Lully called this work a Pastorale h ro que pastorale h ro que , because it was on a pastoral theme and had only three acts plus a prologue compared to the usual five. Otherwise, there is little musically or dramatically to distinguish it from Lully s trag dies . Lully did not work with his usual collaborator, Philippe Quinault , because he was no longer doing theatrical work. Jean Galbert de Campistron wrote the French libretto after the story in Ovid s Metamorphoses poem Metamorphoses . The same story was also to inspire a dramatic work by Handel , Acis and Galatea Handel Acis and Galatea . The opera was commissioned by Louis Joseph, duc de Vend me in honor of Louis, Dauphin of France 1661 1711 Louis, le Grand Dauphin . Performance history It was premiered at the Ch teau d Anet on September 6, 1686 without machines and later at the Acad mie Royale de Musique on September 17, 1686. Image TVIS 11.gif thumb right The ACIS TVIS System Acoustic Control Induction System , or ACIS , is an implementation of a Variable Length Intake Manifold system designed by Toyota . Simply put, the ACIS system uses a single intake air control valve located in the intake to vary the length of the intake tract in order to optimize power and torque, as well as provide better fuel efficiency and reduce intake roar . ref name acis Cite web url http www.toyota.ca cgi bin WebObjects WWW.woa wa vp?vp Home.Help.Glossary&language english 3E title Glossary accessdate 2010 09 22 work Toyota Canada ref The engine control unit ECU controls the position of one or more air control valves based on input signals from throttle angle and engine RPM. The vacuum switching valve VSV which controls the vacuum supply to the actuator is normally closed and passes vacuum to the actuator when it is energized by the ECU. By energizing the VSV vacuum is passed to the actuator, closing the air control valve. This effectively lengthens the intake manifold run. By de energizing the VSV, vacuum to the actuator is blocked and trapped vacuum is bled off of the actuator diaphragm. Toyota ACIS is an On Off system. The valve or valves in newer models with multiple valves to create more than 2 lengths is either fully opened or fully closed. An example of early single valve ACIS programming would be the 3.0L 3VZ FE engine. The ECU actuates the VSV to close the valve when the throttle position is 60 or greater and engine speed is 3,900 RPM or greater. Handel Aci, Galatea e Polifemo HWV 72 is a dramatic cantata also called a serenata by George Frederic Handel . It was first performed at Naples on 19 July 1708 the completed score is dated to 16 June 1708. The serenata was commissioned most probably by Donna Aurora Sanseverino, Duchess of Laurenzano. It is likely that the work was composed for the wedding festivities of the Duke of Alvito, Tolomeo Saverio Gallo, and Beatrice Tocco di Montemiletto, Princess of Acaja and niece of Aurora Sanseverino. The Italian language Italian libretto was written by Nicola Giuvo , private secretary and literature adviser of Duchess Sanseverino. The plot is virtually the same as in Handel s later English language pastoral opera Acis and Galatea Handel Acis and Galatea , but Handel drew little on the music of the cantata when he returned to the story in 1718. The role of Polifemo Polyphemus , a cyclops whose actions have lethal consequences for Aci Acis , is particularly notable for the vast range and singular vocal agility required. The part ranges from the D below the bass stave to the A above it and that in one aria, Fra l ombre e gl orrori .
