  1. Charles Jordan (baritone)

    Charles Jordan 3 April 1915 dash 27 June 1986 was a Canadian baritone and voice teacher born in Montreal . He first studied singing with Adrienne Bourassa in Montreal during the 1930s, and later was a pupil of Albert Whitehead at the Toronto Conservatory of Music from 1941 1943. As a performer he was mainly active on Canadian radio, making his professional debut singing French chassons on CKAC in 1937. He performed regularly on CKAC and with various Canadian Broadcasting Corporation orchestras in Montreal through 1940. From 1941 1943 he recorded several oratorio s and opera s by Purcell and Handel for the CBC, including Polyphemus in Acis and Galatea Handel Acis and Galatea . From 1944 1950 he worked as a radio singer for both the CBC in Toronto, and for the American radio programs Sweetwood Serenade NBC and Sunday Night Serenade MBS in New York City. After 1950, Jordan divided his time between performing and teaching singing in Toronto. Several well known actors studied singing with him, including Susan Clark , Lorne Greene , and William Shatner . He also made several albums during the 1950s of Canadian classical music and Canadian folk songs.     Paul Herget 1908 1981 was an American astronomer . Herget taught astronomy at the University of Cincinnati . He was a pioneer in the use of machine methods, and eventually digital computers, in the solving of scientific and specifically astronomical problems for example, in the calculation of ephemeris tables for minor planet s . Asteroid 1751 Herget is named after him. During World War II he applied these same talents to the war effort, helping to locate U boats by means of the application of spherical trigonometry. Herget established the Minor Planet Center at the university after the war in 1947. He was also named director of the Cincinnati Observatory . The Minor Planet Center was eventually relocated in 1978 to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it still operates.     Antonio de Literes 18 June 1673 Majorca   18 January 1747 Madrid , also known as Antonio Lliteres Carrio or Antonio Literes Carri n was a Spanish composer of zarzuela s . As with other national forms of baroque opera , Literes s stage works employ a wide variety of musical forms Aria arias , Aria ariettas and recitative accompanied and unaccompanied as well as dance movements and Choir choruses , though here mingled with spoken verse dialogue . His use of the orchestra follows French and Italian practise in including guitar s, lute s and harpsichord s amongst the continuo instruments. From 1693, after the exile of his predecessor Sebasti n Dur n , Literes became the Master of the Capilla Real of Madrid , playing the bass viol and soon being accounted the greatest Spanish court composer of his time. Zarzuelas His most famous work was Acis y Galatea 1708 , to a libretto by Jose de Canizares Jos de Canizares , which enjoyed frequent performances in Madrid s Spanish court and public theatres until at least 1774. Another of his best zarzuelas is J piter y Semele 1718 , to a text by the same author. Agnew read music as a Choral scholar Choral Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford . He became associated with the Consort of Musicke , the Tallis Scholars , the Sixteen and the Gothic Voices , before embarking on a solo career in the early 1990s. Closely associated with William Christie musician William Christie and Les Arts Florissants ensemble Les Arts Florissants , Paul Agnew has performed the roles of Jason in Marc Antoine Charpentier Charpentier s M d e Charpentier M d e and of Hippolyte in Jean Philippe Rameau Rameau s Hippolyte et Aricie , as well as appearing on the recordings of La descente d Orph e aux enfers and Les plaisirs de Versailles , both by Marc Antoine Charpentier Acis and Galatea Handel Acis and Galatea by George Frideric Handel , and Rameau s Grands Motets Gramophone Award Gramophone s Best Early Music Vocal award in 1995 . In 2007 Agnew conducted Les Arts Florissants ensemble Les Arts Florissants in a performance of Antonio Vivaldi . He is the first person other than William Christie musician William Christie to conduct the ensemble. He has since combined his conducting and singing careers.
