  1. Expansion slots

merge to Expansion card date November 2011 Expansion slots are specific slots on a PC motherboard that facilitate the placement of expansion card s. All such expansion slots are colour coded, and are built in such a way that only a specific type of card or device can interface with be inserted into the device. Types Common types of expansion slots are Conventional PCI PCI , PCI X , PCI Express and Accelerated Graphics Port AGP . PCI Main Conventional PCI Peripheral Controller Interface these operate at either 33 or 66  MHz and 64 bits. This utilises parallel technology. PCI X Main PCI X This is the latest version of PCI technology operating at 66  MHZ and 64 bits. This also utilises parallel technology. PCI Express Main PCI Express This had less channels for data but it was much faster than AGP technology. It was cheaper to design and build. This type of slot was much more upgradeable expandable. It was also serial technology. AGP Main Accelerated Graphics Port This was a designated slot reserved for graphics cards. It was utilised in a motherboard that would be used in a PC that required high end graphics processing abilities. AGP Pro Used for Mac s that require high re draw capabilities. A good example would be a PC running AutoCAD. Some slots required up to 110W of dedicated power, this would be delivered using a power supply with its own MOLEX. Slot power supply PCI slots Can supply a maximum of 5V. It is important to note that a 5V card would not fit into a 3.3V slots. There are cards that can operate on two voltages they automatically default to the lower voltage. AGP slots These work on either 3.3V or 1.5V. See also Expansion card Motherboard Notes In recent times however we have seen the gradual replacement of AGP slots and cards with PCI type slots and cards. They have proven to be faster. They have also proven themselves to be more versatile as a greater number of components can be attached to a PCI slot via the right PCI card. This can also lend i ...   more details

  1. Local bus

Unreferenced date December 2009 In computer science , a local bus is a computer bus that connects directly, or almost directly, from the Central processing unit CPU to one or more slots on the expansion bus . The significance of direct connection to the CPU is avoiding the bottleneck engineering bottleneck created by the expansion bus, thus providing fast throughput . There are several local buses built into various types of computers to increase the speed of data transfer. Local buses for expanded memory and video boards are the most common. VESA Local Bus is an example of a local bus design. Although VL Bus was later succeeded by Accelerated Graphics Port AGP , it is not correct to categorize AGP as a local bus. Whereas VL Bus operated on the CPU s memory bus at the CPU s clock speed, an AGP peripheral runs at specified clock speeds that run independently of the CPU clock usually using a divider of the CPU clock . For certain supported motherboard chipsets, nVIDIA recommends the NvAGP driver instead see Appendix F of nVIDIA s README for your driver, available from their http www.nvidia.com object unix.html Unix driver page . Agpgart is usually preferable except where noted above , so it is given priority in the system. Even if you have NvAGP 1 in xorg.conf , agpgart will be loaded. 1. LPX (form factor)

Computer form factors LPX Low Profile eXtension , originally developed by Western Digital, was a loosely defined motherboard format Computer form factor form factor widely used in the 1990s. There was never any official LPX specification, but the design normally featured the main I O ports mounted on the back of the motherboard something that was later adopted by the ATX form factor , and a riser card in the center of the motherboard, on which the Peripheral Component Interconnect PCI and Industry Standard Architecture ISA slots were mounted. Due to the lack of standardised specification, riser cards were seldom compatible from one motherboard design to another, much less one manufacturer to another. The internal PSU connector was of the same type used in the AT form factor most LPX cases were compatible with AT power supplies, though some used models that were smaller than standard, and usually manufacturer specific. The specification was very popular in the early mid 90 s, and briefly displaced the AT form factor as the most commonly used. However, the release of the Pentium II in 1997 highlighted the flaws of the format, as a good airflow was important in Pentium II systems, owing to the relatively high heat dispersal requirements of the processor. LPX systems suffered a restricted airflow due to the centrally placed riser cards. The introduction of the Accelerated Graphics Port AGP format further complicated matters, as the design not only increased the pincount on riser cards, but it limited most cards to one AGP, one PCI and one ISA slot, which was too restrictive for most users. Some lower quality LPX boards didn t even feature a real AGP slot, but simply used a physical AGP slot and connected it to the PCI bus. This was seldom noticed however, as many AGP graphics cards of the time were in fact PCI cards internally, and did not take advantage of the features offered by AGP. LPX was phased out around 1998. NLX motherboard form factor NLX was the intended succ ...   more details

The Intel740 , or i740 , is a graphics processing unit using an Accelerated Graphics Port AGP interface released by Intel in 1998. Intel was hoping to use the i740 to popularize the AGP port, while most graphics vendors were still using Conventional PCI PCI . Released with enormous fanfare, the i740 proved to have disappointing real world performance Fact date June 2009 , and sank from view after only a few months on the market. Some of its technology lived on in the Intel GMA systems that continue to be sold to this day. 1. Processor Direct Slot

Image LC PDS Ethernet Card.jpg right thumb 250px LC PDS Ethernet card. PDS connector is at bottom left of photo. The card was mounted parallel to the main logicboard, unlike most computer busses where cards are inserted at right angles to the motherboard. Processor Direct Slot or PDS introduced by Apple Computer , in several of their Apple Macintosh Macintosh models, provided a limited measure of hardware expandibility, without going to the expense in both desktop space and selling price of providing full fledged computer bus bus expansion slots . Typically, a machine would feature multiple bus expansions slots, if any. However, there was never more than one PDS slot. Rather than providing a sophisticated communication protocol with arbitration between different bits of hardware that might be trying to use the communication channel at the same time, the PDS slot, for the most part, just gave direct access to signal pins on the CPU. Thus, PDS slots tended to be CPU specific, and a card designed for the PDS slot in the Motorola 68030 based Macintosh SE 30 would not work in the Motorola 68040 based Quadra 700. The one notable exception to this was the PDS design for the original Motorola 68020 based Macintosh LC . This was Apple s first attempt at a low cost Mac, and it was such a success that, when subsequent models replaced the CPU with a 68030, a 68040, and later a PowerPC processor, ways were found to keep the PDS slot compatible with the original LC, so that the same expansion cards would continue to work. Similarities to AGP The Accelerated Graphics Port or AGP, which was the most widespread standard for connecting graphics cards to PC motherboards from 1997 until 2005, may be considered to be somewhere in between a PDS and a bus. Like a PDS, there is no bus arbitration, so you can only have one AGP card per system however, it works at a higher level than a PDS, in that it is CPU agnostic, and AGP cards can be designed to work across Intel or AMD based PCs as wel ...   more details
