Production varies seasonally and in response to the weather, but the spring never runs dry. The Aachtopf is a karst spring which is located south of the western end of the Swabian Jura , near the town Aach, Baden W rttemberg Aach . The name Aachtopf is compounded from Aach meaning water in Old High German the name of the river created by the spring is in full the Radolfzeller Aach . Topf can be translated as bowl and is commonly used for round, bowl shaped springs. The Radolfzeller Aach flows southward into Lake Constance , which empties into the Rhine . Image AachTopfPano01.jpg left 260px The spring marks the southern end of a cave system which transports water from the western end of the Swabian Jura. Most of the water is derived from the River Danube and is obtained where the latter river disappears underground at the Donauversickerung Danube Sink near Immendingen and Fridingen . Strangely, the Danube flows eastwards into the Black Sea , whereas the Rhine flows northwards to the North Sea . Therefore the water of the Aach flows under the European continental divide. This is a relatively common feature of karst stream capture s. The karst spring is connected to a huge cave, which runs northwards. The cave is completely water filled and can only be explored by cave diver s. The first exploration was made by Jochen Hasenmayer , a famous German cave diver. Dictionary of Physical Geography . London Penguin, 1984, p. 291. ISBN 0 14 051094 X. ref is a spring hydrosphere spring that is part of a karst system. That includes the underground drainage of a much larger area, which means that karst springs often have a very large Discharge hydrology discharge . Because of their often conical or bowl shape, such water sources are also known in German speaking lands as a Topf pot which is reflected in names such as Aachtopf the source of the Radolfzeller Aach or Blautopf the source of the Blau river Blau river in Blaubeuren . Karst springs are usually the end of a cave system at the place where a river cave reaches the Earth s surface. Thus, it is often possible to enter the caves at karst spring and explore them. In North Africa springs known as ain reach the surface as a result of an artesian basin and are of particular importance in arid climate arid regions. They can produce a flow of water directly or result in evaporitic saline crusts. Known examples are found in the oases of the Tunisian region of Bled el Djerid and in the entire area around the depression geology depression s of Chott el Djerid and Chott el Gharsa . Here, there are water bearing strata, usually of sand or sandstone, that act as aquifer s in their function. It is the source of the River Rhume . Description The spring is easy to get to as there is a road and car park nearby. D ... more details
