unreferenced date June 2009 bot yes An abstract structure in mathematics is a formal object that is defined by a set of laws, properties, and relationships in a way that is logically if not always historically independent of the structure of contingent experiences, for example, those involving physical objects. Abstract structures are studied not only in logic and mathematics but in the fields that apply them, as computer science , and in the studies that reflect on them, as philosophy and especially the philosophy of mathematics . Indeed, modern mathematics has been defined in a very general sense as the study of abstract structures by the Nicolas Bourbaki Bourbaki group see discussion there, at algebraic structure and also structure category theory structure . An abstract structure may be represented perhaps with some degree of approximation by one or more physical objects this is called an implementation or instantiation of the abstract structure. But the abstract structure itself is defined in a way that is not dependent on the properties of any particular implementation. An abstract structure has a richer structure than a concept or an idea . An abstract structure must include precise rules of behaviour which can be used to determine whether a candidate implementation actually matches the abstract structure in question. Thus we may debate how well a particular government fits the concept of democracy , but there is no room for debate over whether a given sequence of moves is or is not a valid game of chess. no footnotes date August 2011 Abstract illusionism , a name coined by New York art gallery owner and author Louis K. Meisel , is an artistic movement that came into prominence in the United States during the mid 1970s. Works consisted of both hard edge and abstract expressionism expressionistic abstract painting styles that employed the use of perspective, artificial light sources, and simulated cast shadows to achieve the illusion of three dimensional space on a two dimensional surface. Abstract Illusionism differed from traditional Trompe l il fool the eye art in that the pictorial space seemed to project in front of, or away from, the canvas surface, as opposed to receding into the picture plane as in traditional painting. Primarily, though, these were abstract paintings, as opposed to the realism of Trompe L oeil. By the early 1980s, many of the visual devices that originated in Abstract Illusionism were appropriated into the commercial world and served a wide variety of applications in graphic design, fabric design and the unlikely decoration of recreational vehicles. Abstract Impressionism is a type of abstract painting not to be confused with Abstract Expressionism , a similar but different movement where small brushstrokes build and structure large paintings. Small brushstrokes exhibit control of large areas, expressing the artist s emotion and focus on inner energy, and sometimes contemplation, creating expressive, lyrical and thoughtful qualities in the paintings. The brushstrokes are similar to those of Impressionists such as Monet and Post Impressionists such as van Gogh and Seurat , only tending toward Abstract Expressionism. While in the action painting style of Abstract Expressionism brushstrokes were often large and bold and paint was applied in a rapid outpouring of emotion and energy, the Abstract Impressionist s short and intense brushstrokes or non traditional application of paints and textures is done slowly and with purpose, using the passage of time as an asset and a technique. Milton Resnick , Sam Francis , Richard Pousette Dart , and Philip Guston were notable Abstract Impressionist painters during the 1950s. Paul Jackson Pollock January 28, 1912 August 11, 1956 , known as Jackson Pollock, was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement, and Canadian artist Jean Paul Riopelle helped introduce Abstract Impressionism to Paris in the 1950s.
