  1. Acoustic foam

Refimprove date August 2011 Acoustic foam is an open celled foam used for acoustic treatment . It attenuates airborne sound waves by increasing air resistance, this reducing the amplitude of the waves. The energy is dissipated as heat . Acoustic Foam can be made in several different colors, sizes and thickness. It is best applied directly to a wall. ref cite web title Acoustic Foam Sound Insulation url http www.foamorder.com acoustic.html accessdate 9 October 2011 ref Acoustic foam comes in a variety of sizes and can be attached to walls, ceilings, doors, and other features of a room to control noise levels, vibration, and echoes. 1. Acoustic homing

Unreferenced date December 2009 Image AcousticHomingDiagram.svg right thumb 150px An illustration of steering based on sound volume Acoustic homing is a system which uses sound to guide a moving object, such as a torpedo . Acoustic homing can be either Passive or Active in nature. Using Passive, the system is designed to move either toward or away from a sound, and may also be designed to move only toward certain types of sounds to the exclusion of others. While Active is a true Sonar . The system emits a sound pulse, that reflects off objects and then back to the system. Where the system processes the echos to determine the proper response. Method An object can be equipped with two or more acoustic transducers , which function as loudspeaker speakers and microphones . If a transducer receives a sound louder than that received by the other transducer, the object turns in the transducer s direction. If the object is to manoeuvre in three dimensional space, more than two transducers are needed. Typically, more than three transducers are used, and arrays of over 100 are not unknown. A large number of transducers allows for more accurate steering. Uses Acoustic homing is useful in weapons , specifically torpedo es. Torpedoes can be made to move toward ships using acoustic homing. Unreferenced date December 2009 An acoustic network is a method of positioning equipment using sound waves . It is primarily used in water, and can be as small or as large as required by the users specifications. The simplest acoustic network consists of one measurement resulting in a single range between sound source and sound receiver receiver . Bigger networks are only limited by the amount of equipment available, and computing power needed to resolve the resulting data. 1. Acoustic suspension

The acoustic suspension woofer is a type of loudspeaker that reduces bass distortion caused by non linear, stiff Machine mechanical suspensions in conventional loudspeakers. It was invented in 1954 by Edgar Villchur , and brought to commercial production by Villchur and Henry Kloss with the founding of Acoustic Research in Cambridge Mass. Description The acoustic suspension woofer sometimes known as air suspension uses the elastic cushion of air within a sealed enclosure to provide the restoring force for the woofer diaphragm. Unlike the stiff suspension of conventional speakers, the trapped air inside the sealed loudspeaker enclosure provides a more linear restoring force for the woofer s diaphragm acoustics diaphragm , enabling it to oscillate a greater distance excursion in a linear fashion. This is a requirement for clean reproduction of deep bass tones by drivers with relatively small cones e.g. smaller than 12 16 inches in diameter not mounted in a horn or similar for increased coupling at low frequencies enclosure. Acoustic suspension cabinets are not entirely airtight. A small amount of airflow must be allowed so the speaker can adjust to changes in atmospheric pressure. Acoustic suspension woofers were once very popular in hi fi systems, due to their low distortion. However, as bass reflex cabinet design has improved, speakers with ported enclosures have become more common, especially in home theater and mid level stereo systems. 1. Acoustic signature

for the article with regards audio files Acoustic fingerprint TOCright unreferenced date July 2008 Acoustic signature is used to describe a combination of acoustic emissions of ships and submarines. Contributing factors The acoustic signature is made up of a number of individual elements. These include Machinery noise noise generated by a ship s engines, propeller shafts, fuel pumps, air conditioning systems, etc. Cavitation noise noise generated by the creation of gas bubbles by the turning of a ship s Propellers Marine propellers . Hydrodynamic noise noise generated by the movement of water displaced by the hull of a moving vessel. These emissions depend on a hull s dimensions, the installed machinery and ship s displacement. Therefore different ship class es will have different combinations of acoustic signals that together form a unique signature. Targeting Hydrophone s and Sonar operating in passive mode can detect acoustic signals radiated by otherwise invisible submarines, and use these signals to target attacks. Modern naval mine s and torpedo es such as the CAPTOR mine can be programmed to distinguish the acoustic signatures of different vessels, leaving friendly vessels unmolested and attacking high value target s when faced with multiple possible targets, e.g. distinguishing an aircraft carrier from its escorts. Countermeasures and acoustic quieting main Acoustic quieting Warship designers aim to reduce the acoustic signature of ships and submarines just as much as they aim to reduce the radar cross section s and infra red signals. For submarines, as a prime factor in how they can be detected the reduction of the acoustic signature is a primary goal. The acoustic signature can be reduced by fitting of machinery with the best possible Engineering tolerance mechanical tolerances and designed to produce a minimum of noise. decoupling the machinery from the hull ...
