Image AeratedWater.jpg thumb 210px Aerated water coming from a faucet Aerated water is, correctly speaking, distilled water to which wiktionary purification purified air is added to improve its flavor. The term is, however, frequently applied to carbonated water . Purpose of aeration Sulfur chemical compound compounds dissolved in water are not necessarily dangerous, but can give the water a bad taste or foul smell. These compounds can be removed in several ways, the most effective being by exposure to chlorine gas. However, aeration can also be effective if the amount of sulfur in the water is relatively low. During aeration, water is pumped into a non pressurized tank and agitated. This physically removes many of the sulfur compounds, which are then vented. Exposure to oxygen in the air also oxidizes some of the compounds, creating atomic sulfur which can be filtered from the water. Aeration is also an effective means of removing radon from water. Small tanks and Pond aeration ponds for keeping aquatic animals such as fish or lobsters often rely on aeration to maintain sufficient level of Oxygenation environmental oxygenation in the water. This can be achieved by pumping air into the water, allowing it to bubble to the surface or by a fountain jet agitating the water. Both these methods create an agitated, large amount of surface area between the water and the air, thus allowing transfer of gases. Wave action on the shores of large bodies of water can provide aeration of the water in the vicinity, thus providing enhanced oxygenation which can benefit various aquatic lifeforms. Unreferenced date November 2008 The Lagoon is a short story by Joseph Conrad composed in 1896 and first published in Cornhill Magazine in 1897 . The story is about a man that is referred to as Tuan which is the equivalent of Lord or Sir , a white man travelling through an Indonesian rainforest, who is forced to stop for the night with a distant Malay friend named Arsat. Upon arriving, he finds Arsat distraught, for his lover is dying. Arsat tells the distant and rather silent white man a story of his past. Plot summary The story that Arsat tells tuan Malayan for sir is about sadness and betrayal. Arsat tells of the time when he and his brother kidnapped Diamelen his lover, who was previously a servant of the Rajah s wife . They all fled in a boat at night, and travelled until they were exhausted. They stopped on a bit of land jutting out into the water to rest. Soon however, they spotted a large boat of the Rajah s men coming to find them. Arsat s brother told Diamelen and Arsat to flee to the other side where there was a fisherman s hut. He instructed them to take the fisherman s boat and then stayed back, telling them to wait for him while he dealt with the pursuers. However, Arsat did everything but wait for his brother. As he pushed the boat from shore, he saw his brother running down the path, being chased by the pursuers. Arsat s brother triped and the enemy was upon him. His brother called out to him three times, but Arsat never looked back. He betrayed his brother for a woman that he loved. Towards the end of the story, symbolically, the sun rises, and Diamelen dies. Arsat has nothing now he doesn t have a brother or a wife. He has lost everything. Wainono Lagoon is a shallow lake in the southern Canterbury, New Zealand Canterbury region of New Zealand s South Island . ref LINZ 15794 22 October 2007 ref A number of rivers flow into the lagoon, including the Hook River from the north and the Waihao River from the south. Nearby settlements include Hook, New Zealand Hook and Studholme , with the town of Waimate approximately eight kilometres west. Tests have revealed that the level of the lagoon does not fluctuate with the tide and its level of salinity is low.
