CSRMA stand for Center for Studies and Research on Aeronautical Medicine it Centro Studi e Ricerche di Medicina Aeronautica Target Centro Studi e Ricerche di Medicina Aeronautica in Guidonia . The center was attached to the it Aeronautica Militare Target ITAF High Altitude Unit, with two branches at Turin University, Faculty of Medicine , Institute for Human Pathology, and at the Milan Catholic University s Laboratory of Experimental Psychology, with the aim of investigating the effects of high altitude, acceleration and depressurisation on the human body and psyche. At Guidonia the Center took over, and improved, many facilities pertaining to the Italian Forensic Institute in Montecelio, that had been working since the 30 s. The Center devoted itself to the training of pilots on very high altitude missions. Extremely complex equipment would test and verify the capability of pilots assigned to such highly demanding tasks, to test heart and ventilation condition under specific operating stress parameters. There were anechoic chambers, machines to monitor a pilot breathing the same air over and over until hypoxia emerged, and a special tank to expose pilots to decompression and extremely low temperatures, built by ITAF technicians as far back as 1920. In the simulation of high altitude conditions, pilots were constantly monitored and diagnosed to control reactions hypoxia, cramps, lack of concentration, sight problems, drowsiness or euphoria symptoms, mistakes in elementary calculating and writing operations, loss of consciousness. This research activity led in 1937 to the high altitude record 15,655 mt in a piston engined aircraft attained by Lt.Col. Mario Pezzi . In the attempt, he wore a pressurized suit anticipating a number of features of the ones used by today s astronauts. In a second attempt, a year later, Pezzi reached an altitude of 17,083 mt in a pressurized, heated capsule very similar to modern space capsules. It was a conventional low wing monoplane with retractable Tricycle gear tricycle undercarriage and engine intakes on the fuselage sides. The pilot and instructor sat in tandem under a long bubble canopy . Two G.80 prototype s were followed by three pre production machines, but the Aeronautica Militare found it unsuitable to their requirements and did not purchase it in quantity. Undeterred, Fiat developed a refined version dubbed the G.82 for entry in a NATO competition to select a standard jet trainer. Apart from many detail changes, the G.82 featured a longer fuselage, a Rolls Royce Nene engine in place of the G.80 s de Havilland Goblin , and wingtip tanks. Five aircraft were constructed, but when the competition was cancelled and the G.82 was not selected by either NATO or the Aeronautica Militare , the development programme was finally terminated. Plans for specialised versions including night fighter , reconnaissance , and Close air support close support aircraft went unrealised, as did the G.84 that was to have been powered by an Allison J35 . The G.82s were used for a few years by the Aeronautica Militare s training school at Amendola before being handed over to the Reparto Sperimentale Volo Department of Experimental Flight in 1957.
