He designed tapestries, painted wall hangings and decorated objects such as fans, snuffboxes and even the glass windows of a magic lantern . When 15 years old he served as apprentice to the Dordrecht artist nl Adriaen van der Burg Adriaen van der Burg 1693 1733 . Schouman was unusual among painters in that he kept a detailed diary of his professional life from 16 October 1733 to 16 November 1753. He took on his first art pupil in 1733 and continued teaching for the rest of his life. In 1736 he founded the Brotherhood of St. Luke, a fraternity of amateur art lovers from Dordrecht and environs. Schouman was a leading artist in Zeeland between 1735 and 1785. During that period he lived and worked in Dordrecht, The Hague and Middelburg and taught pupils in Dordrecht and The Hague. He travelled to England twice and assembled an important collection of paintings. Gerard Jan Henk van Gelder Fellow of the British Academy FBA born 10 June 1947 is a Dutch academic who has been Laudian Professor of Arabic at the University of Oxford since 1998. Life After completing his secondary education at the Vossius Gymnasium Amsterdam, Van Gelder studied at the University of Amsterdam , then worked as Librarian at the Institute for the Modern Near East at the University from 1973 to 1975. He was Lecturer in Arabic at the University of Groningen from 1975 to 1998, gaining a doctorate from the University of Leiden in 1982. He was appointed as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1997. He moved to the University of Oxford in 1998 to take up the position of Laudian Professor of Arabic , becoming a Oxbridge Fellow Fellow of St John s College, Oxford . Richard George Van Gelder December 17, 1928 February 23, 1994 was a prominent mammalogist who served as the Curator of Mammalogy for the American Museum of Natural History in New York for more than twenty five years. Among his accomplishments at the Museum of Natural History was the 1969 redesign of the Hall of Ocean Life featuring the blue whale which still hangs in the center of the hall. Among his colleagues in the Mammal Department at the AMNH were Karl Koopman , Marie A. Lawrence, Guy Musser , and Sydney Anderson. In the late 1950s, while on the Puritan Expedition to the Baja Peninsula, he discovered a new species of vesper bat commonly known as Van Gelder s Bat .
