  1. Pyrrhias of Aetolia

dablink For other uses, see Pyrrhias . Pyrrhias lang el polytonic was an Aetolia n general, who was sent by his countrymen during the Social War 220 217 BC , to take the command in Elis . Here he took advantage of the absence of Philip V of Macedon , and the incapacity of Eperatus the Achaean League Achaean strategos , to make frequent incursions into the Achaean territories. Having established a fortified post on Mount Panachaikon , he laid waste the whole country as far as Rhion and Aigio n. The next year 217 BC he concerted a plan with Lycurgus of Sparta Lycurgus , king of Sparta , for the invasion of Messenia . However, he failed in the execution of his part of the scheme, being repulsed by the Kyparissia Cyparissians before he could effect a junction with Lycurgus. In consequence he returned to Elis, but as the Eleans were dissatisfied with his conduct, he was shortly after recalled by the Aetolians and replaced by Euripidas. Polybius V. 30, 91, 92, 94. At a later period he obtained the office of strategos of the Aetolians, in the same year 208 BC that this office was bestowed as an honorary title upon Attalus I , king of Pergamon . In the spring of that year he advanced with an army to Lamia city Lamia to oppose the passage of Philip V of Macedon towards the Peloponnese. Though supported with an auxiliary force both by Attalus and by the Roman Republic Roman praetor Publius Sulpicius Galba Maximus , he was defeated by Philip in two successive battles First Battle of Lamia First and Second Battle of Lamia and forced to retire within the walls of Lamia. Livy, XXVII.30 It is not improbable that Sipyrrhicas, who appears in Livy XXXI.46 as chief of the Aetolian deputation which met Attalus at Heracleia, is only a false reading for Pyrrhias. 1. Nicolaus of Aetolia

Nicolaus in Greek language Greek N o o was an Aetolia n, and a general of Ptolemy IV of Egypt Ptolemy IV Philopator 221 BC 221 &ndash 204 BC , king of Ptolemaic Egypt Egypt . In 219 BC we find him besieging Ptolemais , which was held by the traitor Theodotus of Aetolia Theodotus , who had revolted from Ptolemy to Antiochus III the Great 223 BC 223 &ndash 187 BC . Nicolaus, however, abandoned the siege on the approach of the Seleucid Empire Seleucid king. In the same year he did much towards baffling the attempt of Antiochus on Dora in Phoenicia , by sending constant succours to the besieged. In 218 BC he was invested by Ptolemy with the supreme command in Coele Syria , an appointment fully warranted, according to Polybius , by his military experience and bravery. He was, however, dislodged by Antiochus and his generals from a strong position which he had taken up between the range of Mount Lebanon and the sea near the town of Porphyreon , and was obliged to seek safety in a precipitate flight towards Sidon . It may be conjectured that after this he deserted to Antiochus at least, we find the name of Nicolaus of Aetolia mentioned among the generals of the Syrian king in his campaign in Hyrcania , 209 BC . r poly 5.61 66 68 69 10.29 References Polybius http www.perseus.tufts.edu cgi bin ptext?lookup Plb. 1.1 Histories , Evelyn S. 1. Scopas of Aetolia

Scopas lang el was an Aetolia n general, who served both his native Aetolian League in the Social War 220 217 BC and Ptolemaic Egypt against the Seleucids , with mixed success. He was executed in 196 BC at Alexandria for conspiring to seize the power of the realm for himself. Service in the Social War At the period of the outbreak of the Social War 220 217 BC , he held a leading position among his countrymen. He was a kinsman of Ariston , who at this time held the office of strategos in the Aetolian League , and the latter confided to him the chief conduct of affairs. On this account it was to Scopas that Dorimachus applied for assistance after the ill success of his predatory expedition against Messenia , and although no pretext had been given for involving the Aetolians in war, these two generals were bold enough to undertake the enterprise on their own account. Accordingly, in the spring of 220 BC they led an expedition against the Messenians, and not only ravaged the territories of the latter, but when Aratus of Sicyon Aratus himself at the head of the Achaean League Achaean army had come to their support, totally defeated him at Caphyae and effected their retreat unmolested The Histories Polybius Polybius IV. 5, 6, 9, 10 13. This daring outrage having naturally led to a public declaration of war by the Achaean League and their ally Philip V of Macedon against the Aetolians, the latter chose Scopas for their strategos during the ensuing year, and entrusted to him the conduct of the war which he had himself brought upon them. In the spring of 219 he invaded Macedon ia with a large force, laid waste the open country of Pieria prefecture Pieria without opposition, and having made himself master of Dion, Pieria Dion , not only destroyed the town, but even plundered ... of Aetolia itself, leaving it open to Philip to obtain important advantages on the side of Acarnania ... 1. Theodotus of Aetolia

Theodotus in Greek language Greek o o o was an Aetolia n, who at the accession of Antiochus III the Great 223 BC 223 &ndash 187 BC held the command of the important province of Coele Syria for Ptolemy IV of Egypt Ptolemy Philopator 221 BC 221 &ndash 204 BC , king of Ptolemaic Egypt Egypt . He was an able general, and repulsed with ease the first attack made by the king of Seleucid Empire Syria upon his government, but instead of being rewarded by Ptolemy for his services, he was recalled to Alexandria , where he nearly fell a victim to the intrigues of some of the courtiers and favourites of the king. Disgusted with this treatment, and despising the vices and luxury of Ptolemy, when he was again suffered to resume the command in Coele Syria 219 BC he conceived the design of betraying that province into the hands of Antiochus. His overtures were readily welcomed, and he surrendered the two important fortresses of Tyre Lebanon Tyre and City of Acre Ptolemais to the Seleucid monarch, whom he immediately joined with the forces under his command. Nicolaus of Aetolia Nicolaus however prevented his design from taking full effect, and retained a part of the Syrian provinces under the allegiance of Egypt. r poly 5.40 46 61 62 From this time Theodotus enjoyed a high place in the favour of the History of Syria Syrian king. In the campaign of 217 BC we find him commanding a body of ten thousand select troops, and just before the battle of Raphia he gave a singular proof of daring by penetrating with only two companions into the heart of the Egyptian camp, in order to assassinate Ptolemy himself. Mistaking the king s tent, he slew his physician instead, but effected his escape in safety, and returned to the Syrian camp. r poly 5.66 79 81 Again in 215 BC we find him exhibiting equal audacity in supporting the daring project of Lagoras to scale the walls of the city of Sardis , the success of which seems to have been in great measure owing to his skill and ability. r poly 7.16 18 ...   more details
