    no footnotes date July 2010 Afenmai or Afemai is an ethnic language of the group of people living in the northern part of Edo State south geopolitical zone of Nigeria . Afenmai or Afemai people occupy six local government areas of Edo state Etsako West , with headquarters in Auchi , Etsako Central , Etsako East , Owan East , Owan West and Akoko Edo . These make up the Edo North Senatorial District. Afemai ethnic group is subdivided into different dialects , but people of this ethnicity generally speak and understand each other. Citation needed date June 2007 History Afemai, is made of several kingdoms and clans large villages townships ruled traditionally by monarchs and many of them seem to have their own Speech oral versions of the origin of Afemai as well as its own starting point in history. Historical accounts claimed that they migrated from Benin City Benin , during the tyrannical rule of Oba Ewuare, who was the greatest warrior legend and the most outstanding king in the history of Benin Empire .     Edo is the name for the place, people and language of an ethnic group in Nigeria. Other Edo language Edo speaking ethnic groups include the Esan , the Afemai , the Isoko , the Urhobo among others. Also referred to as Bini or Benin ethnic group though currently the people prefer to be simply called Edo, the Edo are the descendants of the people who founded the Benin Empire, which is located in South Mid Western Nigeria now called Edo State . The name Benin is a Portuguese corruption ultimately from the Itsekhiri s Ubinu , which came into use during the reign of Oba Ewuare the Great circa 1440. The Itsekhiri s Ubinu was used to describe the royal administrative centre or city or capital proper of the kingdom, Edo. Ubinu was later corrupted to Bini by the mixed ethnicities living together at the centre and further corrupted to Benin around 1485 when the Portuguese began trade relations with Oba Ewuare. Okpekpe, is in North Ibie , belongs to a large homogenous group of people, the Ibie found in Afemai land, which is at the northern part of Edo State . The Ibie are bordered by River Niger to the east, Etsako West to the west, Auchi to the south, and Kwara State & Kogi State to the north. br br Okpepke is surrounded by other towns and villages like Imiegba,Itsukwi, Imiakebu, Ebelle, Ukhomedokhai, Okeko, Ikphelli, Ukho, etc. The population of the Ibie people has been estimated to be about a 100,000 people according to the 2006 population Census. History The Okpekpe people are said to have migrated to their present location from the old Benin Kingdom during the tyranny of Oba Ewuare , the great, the then Oba of Benin. Oral history has it that, the reason for the migration was because the Oba had decreed that all communities within the Kingdom must mourn the death of his Oba Ewuare son for a long period, without going to farm or hunting. This led to starvation and death among the okpekpe people, thus forcing them to migrate to their current location, a mountainous topography that could serve as defence against any likely invasion by the Oba. The subsistence of the people from Ihievbe is mostly based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Origin of Ihievbe The common ancestor OBOH founded Ihievbe about 1473AD. Ojekpenkhare who was the first son gave birth to ELE who is the founder of a place that was named after him but was wrongly identified as Iyaba. Therefore, its origin is unknown as none of Oboh s children including the grand, great grand and great, great grandchildren bear the name.
