It was formerly considered a subspecies of Ablepharus kitaibelii , but has since been distinguished. It is possible that what is currently recognized as this species is actually two distinct species. Range It is found throughout north and central Israel, western Jordan, and the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. There has also been one unconfirmed sighting in southern Lebanon. It is also possible that it lives in Syria, though this is also unconfirmed. In the areas where it can be found, it is generally uncommon. It is found in the leaf litter of forested or shrubby areas, and in Egypt it is usually found near oases. It is highly localized in densely vegetated areas. In Israel the species is common and can be found in cities. It is one of the few reptiles capable of living in areas afforestation afforested with Aleppo pine These are very widespread in Israel . Possible Threats There are few threats to the species as a whole, though deforestation and loss of traditionally farmed orchards may affect specific populations. Plot introduction The story is the third part of the North Africa series of stories, and a sequel to Border, Breed Nor Birth . Plot summary The story is set in Africa in about the year 2020. Dr Homer Crawford, for many years the tyrant of North and most of Central Africa, under the name of El Hassan , faces a military coup led by his closest supporters, who believe that he is overdue to introduce democracy to his people. Promised a pension and safe passage if he submits, he leaves Africa to retire to Switzerland with his wife Isobel and son Abraham. He escapes an assassination attempt by army officers on board his aeroplane, and makes it safely to Switzerland. Six months later, now a frustrated semi alcoholic, Crawford learns of a counter coup in Africa by a dissident army cabal . Most of the Military dictatorship junta have been shot, but one has managed to make it through to meet Crawford in Switzerland. They decide on desperate measures, contact those of the former supporters of their regime that escaped, and return, one by one, and in disguise, to Africa. Their rendezvous is an afforestation project in what was Southern Algeria. Ostensibly there to launch a counter coup, it is revealed by Crawford that he wants his son Abraham to plan and launch the coup himself. His father and what allies he can gather will form a guerrilla campaign to distract the army and give Abraham time to contact students and form a new political organisation against the ruling colonels. Image FieldWindbreaks.JPG right thumb Aerial view of field windbreaks in North Dakota A windbreak or shelterbelt is a plantation usually made up of one or more rows of tree s or shrub s planted in such a manner as to provide shelter from the wind and to protect soil from erosion . They are commonly planted around the edges of fields on farms. If designed properly, windbreaks around a home can reduce the cost of heating and cooling and save energy . Windbreaks are also planted to help keep snow from drifting onto roadways and even yards. Other benefits include providing habitat for wildlife and in some regions the trees are harvested for wood products. A further use for a shelterbelt is to screen a farm from a main road or motorway. This improves the farm landscape by reducing the visual incursion of the motorway, Noise mitigation mitigating noise from the traffic and providing a safe barrier between farm animals and the road. A further use for windbreaks is for a retail item used on the beach and camping to prevent wind from disturbing social enjoyment. Americans tend to use the term windbreaker whereas Europeans favour the term windbreak . Normally made from cotton, nylon, canvas and recycled sails, windbreaks tend to have three or more panels, held in place with poles that slide into pockets sewn into the panel. The poles are then hammered into the ground and a windbreak is formed. Major shelterbelt projects Forest strips planted on a limited scale started no earlier than the 19th century. Some of the early forest strips, such as the late 19th century Genko s Forest Belt in Russia s Ulyanovsk Oblast , have been declared nature reserves now.
