The National Survey of Health & Development is a Medical Research Council UK Medical Research Council MRC longitudinal survey of people born in Britain in March 1946. It is the granddaddy of all cohort studies and was set up by J. W. B. Douglas less than a year after the end of the second world war. It began with interviews of more than 13 000 mothers who had given birth in the United Kingdom during one week of March 1946. http www.bmj.com content 342 bmj.d942.extract Originally designed to explore the impact of a National Health Service on health and to explore differences in child development by factors like social class, health and education, it has continued and has itself developed into a study of ageing. The regularly updated information about this cohort also contrasts with data from British birth cohort studies other longitudinal studies in Britain and elsewhere. The mission of the Unit is to realise the scientific potential of the NSHD as a world class, interdisciplinary life course study by Scientific discovery of life course influences on normal and healthy ageing Transfer of knowledge to policymakers, health practitioners, and other research users Promotion of healthy ageing The NSHD was formerly based at the London School of Economics under the direction of Dr. James Douglas Disambiguation needed date June 2011 and at the University of Bristol , and then the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London under the direction of Professor Michael Wadsworth . Multiple issues orphan February 2009 original research January 2008 unreferenced January 2008 essay like December 2007 Ageing is a process by which an Work of art art work, typically a painting or sculpture , is made to appear old. It is meant to emulate the natural deterioration that can occur over many decades or centuries. Paintings deteriorate over time because they are created using essentially incompatible materials, with each having a different reaction to the changes in the environment, including light, temperature and relative humidity . An oil painting consists of several layers, comprising the base canvas , a layer of gesso base coat, several layers of the oil paint oil based paint and then several coats of varnish to protect the paint surface. With many different materials, it is understandable that each layer may dry at different rates and will also absorb and release moisture at different rates. When this occurs, expansion and contraction of the painting will result in a crazing of the varnish surface. This pattern of small cracks is known as craquelure . Along with the darkening or yellowing of the varnish surface, it is this visual representation of the cracking that is typically the primary indicator of ageing. The purpose for artificially ageing is to create a finished product that accurately reflects an era or is consistent with the environment usually period into which it is to be placed. Florence, Italy has historically been a center of ageing craft the process of ageing paintings and sculptures has been practised by a small number of artisans who have passed down the techniques through generations, with very little change over the years. British Longevity Society BLS is a non profit organization based in the United Kingdom , dedicated at informing the general public about developments in the fields of biogerontology , ageing and life extension . Background The BLS was established in 1992 by Gerontologist Dr Marios Kyriazis , as a non commercial, charitable society aiming to facilitate the flow of information between academic research in the field of anti aging medicine , and the general public. Its constitution stated the aim of furthering public education on issues connected with the means for counteracting the processes, causes and effects of ageing. Between 1993 and 2004 the society published the BLS Newsletter ISBN 0952965208 . The society was refused official charity status in 1993. The reason given by the Charity Commission was that it would not be in the public interest if lifespan was extended ref Archives, BLS, 1993 ref . Membership The society attracted a diverse membership, both lay and scientific, including not only British citizens but others from European and American countries. Membership was drawn from a wide socioeconomic spectrum, from Knights to notorious life prisoners ref Membership records, BLS 2000 ref . Membership fees were deliberately kept very low 12 year in order to reach pensioners on low income. Current membership is free. Members of the British Longevity Society receive a monthly e mail newsletter, as well as a variety of other discounted products. The BLS holds regular meetings in central London . These are aimed at the lay public, to help them understand new advances in anti ageing medicine.
