  1. Bootstrap aggregating

Bootstrap aggregating bagging is a Ensemble learning machine learning ensemble meta algorithm to improve machine learning of statistical classification and Regression analysis regression models in terms of stability and classification accuracy. It also reduces variance and helps to avoid overfitting . Although it is usually applied to Decision tree learning decision tree models, it can be used with any type of model. Bagging is a special case of the model averaging approach. Description of the technique Given a standard training set D of size n , bagging generates m new training sets math D i math , each of size n n , by Sampling statistics sampling examples from D Probability distribution With finite support uniformly and Sampling statistics Replacement of selected units with replacement . By sampling with replacement, it is likely that some examples will be repeated in each math D i math . If n n , then for large n the set math D i math is expected to have the fraction 1 1 e mathematical constant e 63.2 of the unique examples of D , the rest being duplicates. ref Aslam, Javed A. Popa, Raluca A. and Rivest, Ronald L. 2007 http people.csail.mit.edu rivest pubs APR07.pdf On Estimating the Size and Confidence of a Statistical Audit , Proceedings of the Electronic Voting Technology Workshop EVT 07 , Boston, MA, August 6, 2007. More generally, when drawing with replacement n values out of a set of n different and equally likely , the expected number of unique draws is math n 1 e n n math . ref This kind of sample is known as a bootstrap statistics bootstrap sample. The m models are fitted using the above m bootstrap samples and combined by averaging the output for regression or voting for classification . Since the method averages several predictors, it is not useful for improving linear models. Similarly, bagging does not improve very stable models like k nearest neighbors. 1. Fish aggregating device

A fish aggregating or aggregation device FAD is a man made object used to attract ocean going pelagic fish such as marlin , tuna and mahi mahi dolphin fish . They usually consist of buoy s or floats tethered to the ocean floor with concrete blocks. Over 300 species of fish gather around FADs. FAD s attract fish for numerous reasons that vary by species. Fish tend to move around FADs in varying orbits, rather than remaining stationary below the buoys. Both recreational and commercial fisheries use FADs. Before FADs, commercial tuna fishing used Purse seine purse seining to target surface visible aggregations of birds and dolphins, which were a reliable signal of the presence of tuna schools below. The demand for dolphin safe tuna was a driving force for FADs. ref name noaa Armstrong WA and Oliver CW 1996 http swfsc.noaa.gov uploadedFiles Divisions FRD Fishery Monitoring Tuna LJ 96 02 Text.pdf Recent use of fish aggregation devices in the eastern tropical Pacific tuna purse seine fishery 1990 1994 Administrative report LJ 96 02, Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA . ref Fish behaviour seealso Pelagic fish Floating objects Fish are fascinated with floating objects.
