Charles Totten was born in a military family his father, James Totten was a Brigadier General , and his uncle, Joseph Gilbert Totten was Chief of the United States Army Corps of Engineers . He graduated from West Point where he had been an honor student , and taught military science and tactics at Massachusetts Agricultural College now known as the University of Massachusetts Amherst , briefly at West Point , and served with the Missouri Artillery before taking a post as Professor of Military Tactics at Yale University from 1889 to 1892. The historical outcome of the siege is unclear. Background In 721 BCE, the Assyria n army captured the Israelite capital at Samaria and carried away the citizens of the northern kingdom into captivity. The virtual destruction of Israel left the southern kingdom, Kingdom of Judah Judah , to fend for itself in the whirlwind of warring Near Eastern kingdoms. At the time of Samaria s fall, there existed two kings in Judah Ahaz and his son Hezekiah who ruled as co regents. Judah existed as a vassal to Assyria during this time and was forced to pay an annual tribute to the powerful empire. In 715 BCE, following the death of Ahaz, Hezekiah became the sole regent of Judah and initiated widespread religious reforms smashing the idols the people had worshiped during the reign of his father and leading the Jews toward a renewed relationship with God. It was founded by Asa Mahan in 1851, the then recently resigned president of Oberlin College located in nearby Oberlin, Ohio .
