  1. David Franks (aide-de-camp)

Dablink For the American Revolutionary War loyalist, see David Franks loyalist . David Salisbury Franks Philadelphia , Pennsylvania 1740 1793, Philadelphia was aide de camp for General Benedict Arnold during the American War of Independence . He was living in Quebec with his parents when the American Revolution broke out. A Jew, Franks in 1775 was president of the Shearith Israel congregation of Montreal, the oldest Jewish congregation in Canada, but then less than a decade old. Franks congregation should not be confused with a similarly named congregation in New York. According to the late historian Jacob Rader Marcus, Franks publicly defended the right of a protester to compare King George III of England to the Pope and call him a fool, and Franks was jailed and held for 16 days. The experience converted him to the colonists cause, and, when an army led by Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery invaded Canada in 1775, Franks joined the American forces. He was appointed paymaster of the Continental Army in Quebec and apparently expended his own funds to pay the salaries of the American volunteers. Franks was promoted to major and was assigned as Arnold s aide de camp. ref http www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org jsource biography Franks.html Franks s Biography at the Jewish Virtual Library ref On the failure of the American campaign in Canada, Franks withdrew in July 1776 to Philadelphia, where he joined the Continental Army and served until October 1777. Because he spoke French, Franks was then assigned as liaison officer to the Comte d Estaing, commander of the French naval forces fighting on the American side. Franks served as aide de camp to Arnold at West Point, New York West Point at the time of Arnold s attempt to hand over the fort to the United Kingdom British . The rank also existed in Portugal and Spain , as mestre de campo . When the role of infantry colonel general was abolished in 1661, the mestre de camp took the title of colonel. 1. Maréchal de camp

for the French military distinction Marshal of France other uses2 Field marshal Mar chal de camp sometimes incorrectly translated as field marshal was a general officer Military rank rank used by the French Army until 1848 . ref cite book last Colby first Frank Moore coauthors Talcott Williams, Herbert Treadwell Wade title The New International Encyclop dia publisher Dodd, Mead and company year 1922 page 532 ref The rank originated from the older rank of sergeant major general French language French sergent major g n ral . Sergeant major general was third in command in an army, after the general and the lieutenant general . One of his tasks was to dispose the troops on the battlefield. It was also known in the French army as the battle sergeant fr sergent de bataille . In English speaking countries, the rank of sergeant major general became known as simply major general . Background and history The mar chal de camp rank was the junior of the two officer general ranks of the French Army, the senior being lieutenant general. The rank of brigadier was intermediate between those of colonel and mar chal de camp , but was not considered a general officer rank. Nevertheless, when rank insignia were introduced in the 1770s, the brigadier insignia was one star, that of the mar chal de camp two stars as its foreign equivalent the rank of major general . When the rank of brigadier was abolished in 1788, mar chals de camp assumed command of brigades in the French army, but kept their two star insignia. In 1793, during the French Revolution, the rank was renamed brigade general g n ral de brigade , as the brigade was its normal command. In 1815, the rank of brigade general became once again mar chal de camp , but was changed back again to brigade general in 1848.
