  1. Capture effect

In telecommunication , the capture effect , or FM capture effect , is a phenomenon associated with Frequency modulation FM reception in which only the stronger of two signals at, or near, the same frequency will be demodulation demodulated . The capture effect is defined as the complete suppression of the weaker signal at the receiver radio receiver limiter if it has one where the weaker signal is not Amplifier amplified , but attenuate d. When both signals are nearly equal in strength, or are fading independently, the receiver may switch from one to the other and exhibit picket fencing . The capture effect can occur at the signal limiter, or in the demodulation stage, for circuits that do not require a signal limiter. Citation needed date January 2010 Some types of Detector radio radio receiver circuits have a stronger capture effect than others. The measurement of how well a receiver can reject a second signal on the same frequency is called the capture ratio for a specific receiver. It is measured as the lowest ratio of the power of two signals that will result in the suppression of the smaller signal. Amplitude modulation, or AM broadcasting AM radio , Transmission telecommunications transmission is not subject to this effect. This is one reason that the Airband aviation industry, and others, have chosen to use AM for communications rather than FM, allowing multiple signals to be broadcasting broadcast on the same channel. Similar phenomena to the capture effect are described in AM when offset carriers of different strengths are present in the passband of a receiver. For example, the aviation glideslope vertical guidance clearance beam is sometimes described as a capture effect system, even though it operates using AM signals. Citation needed date January 2010 Amplitude modulation immunity to capture effect In FM demodulation the receiver tracks the modulated frequency shift of the desired carrier while discriminating against any other signal since it can only f ...   more details

  1. Maulers

Notability Music date November 2011 for the town in France Maulers, Oise The Maulers are a fictional rock & roll band created in the early 1980s by several friends in Quincy, IL . The characters are Peter Thruster, lead vocals, brothers Eddie & Alex Vas Deferenz, lead guitars vocals, Bitch Pastey, rhythm guitar vocals, Slats Magnum, bass vocals & Jim Smith, drums. The bands manager is Col. Deryk St. Derrick who holds a 50 year, unbreakable contract in which he agrees to manage the band and have complete control of their lives for 80 of their profits. The purpose of creating the band was to enter an Air Band Contest at a local college. The band won the contest & was invited back for several subsequent visits until it was discovered that only one member of six was actually taking classes, and he was only taking a half credit class. The Maulers were told they could not continue competing since they consistently won, but, would be allowed to perform as an exhibition act. Over the next few years, the Maulers performed in other local airband contests, dazzling audiences with their ability to look like a real rock band, complete with elaborate pyrotechnics & a motorcycle or scooter driven onstage during the song, Bad Motor Scooter by Montrose. With the end of the 80 s, came the decline of the Maulers until in 1997, a friend suggested a party in his backyard with real bands & having the Maulers as a headline act. The gathering would be named Maulerpalooza & on November 1, 1997, the Maulers performed once again with the storyline that their citizenship had been revoked due to an affair between lead singer Thruster & the wife of the head of corporate telecommunications giant, MCI. They had been playing in southeast Asian brothels for the last 10 years & were now sneaking back into the country to perform for a few of their loyal fans before their infamous 1980 1999 World Carnage Tour ended. The performance was a success & the band played once again in the summer of 1998 at a d ...   more details

Early life and career His first theater experience was in the large scale production of the nativity for the Medford, Oregon First Nazarene Church at age 7. The acting bug bit him and he appeared in every school performance he could. He competed twice in school talent contests playing airband with friends in fifth and sixth grade. Nobody could play an airguitar like I could, man he was quoted saying. In high school his attention was more focused on working, dating and being a class clown. Pressure from friends kept him from auditioning for plays as it was seen as uncool by his peers. In his senior year, he and a friend approached the teacher in charge of the theater program and convinced him to allow them to build sets and perform technical work on productions to satisfy their need for an elective credit to graduate. Shawn and his friend Jack Mills built sets and props for several plays that year and worked the stage lights for several productions. In college, Shawn was able to return to his love of performing when he landed the role of the Sherriff in the play The Crucible for Hawaii Pacific University directed by Joyce Maltby. Unfortunately, illness and slipping grades forced him to drop out only a week before opening night leaving his understudy to take over the role. He focused on honing his craft for the next 4 years by taking workshops by Hawaii based casting director Margaret Doversola who would become a dear friend of his over the span of ten years. Shawn also took acting classes f ...   more details

Refimprove date December 2007 Image B 29 silverplate.gif thumb right Boeing B 29 Superfortress showing conventional single vertical stabilizer TOCright The vertical stabilizers , vertical stabilisers , or fins , of aircraft , missile s or bomb s are typically found on the aft end of the fuselage or body, and are intended to reduce aerodynamic side slip and provide direction stability. It is analogical to a skeg on boats and ships. On aircraft, vertical stabilizers generally point upwards. These are also known as the vertical tail, and are part of an aircraft s empennage . The trailing end of the stabilizer is typically movable, and called the rudder this allows the aircraft pilot to control Aircraft principal axes Vertical axis .28yaw.29 yaw . Often radio navigation navigational radio or airband transceiver antenna radio antennas are placed on or inside the vertical tail. In most Trijet aircraft with three jet engines , the vertical stabilizer houses the central engine or engine inlet duct. Vertical stabilizers, or fins have also been used in automobile s, specifically in top level motor sports, with the concept making a resurgence in both Formula 1 and Le Mans Prototype racing. A few aircraft models have a ventral fin under the rear end. Normally this is small, or can fold sideways, to allow landing. The North American X 15 had 4 equal fins round its tail end like a missile s. Also see Dornier Do 335 .
