Alaskan Natives have a special connection to the land around them, and a kinship with the animals with whom they share that land. Before the introduction of western culture and the religions that are now practiced in Alaska , there was a common spiritual connection made with the people to the land they occupied. The most common name for this connection is shamanism . Shamanism differs in every culture where it is practiced, in Alaska it is centered in the animals that are common in the area. Through the use of many myths, stories, and ceremonies these animals are personified and their spirits made tangible and in turn are deeply woven within the Native Alaskan people today. It was through the shaman that the spirit world was connected to the natural world. A shaman in Alaskan Native culture was a mediator, healer and the spirit worlds mouthpiece. Although shamanism is no longer popularly practiced, it was and continues, to be the heart of the Native Alaskan people. As excerpted from their website Malavika Tara Mohanan, trained in Bharatanatyam a South Indian classical dance form and theater, also uses elements of flamenco and other traditions to create a language of movement such that the written word can be embodied while spoken. Texts include several original pieces, as well as writings by Emmanuel Ortiz , Howard Zinn , and Roberto Juarroz . Denali DeGraf plays Indigenous peoples of the Americas Native American Flutes and Drums which he also builds , and the charango, a traditional Andes Andean instrument. The music includes an Aztec song for the dead, a Sanskrit chant for wellbeing, and several original instrumental compositions. Apartheid legislation in South Africa The Representation of Natives Act No 12 of 1936 commenced 10 July was legislation passed in South Africa which further reduced black rights at the time. Blacks in the Cape were no longer eligible to vote for the common roll, but were placed instead on a separate roll and halts the right to run for office. Africans throughout South Africa were then represented in government by four white senators. With this act, African voters in the Cape were removed from the common rolls on which they had been registered since 1854. Voting on a communal roll, they would elect three whites to the assembly, then consisting of 150 members elected by whites and a few Coloureds and two whites to the provincial council. Chiefs, local councils, urban advisory boards and election committees in all provinces were to elect four whites to the senate by a system of block voting. The act also created a Native Representative Council of six white officials, four nominated and twelve elected Africans.
