History Originally from Alberschweiler in Bavaria, Germany, 45 year old Elias Kahn immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio , USA , in 1880 with his wife and nine children. Cincinnati, also known as Porkopolis , had previously peaked as a leader in pork packing. Once a dominant industry from the pre American Civil War Civil War era, the half million hogs that were corraled through the city s streets had faded by the mid 19th century. Originally with his brother Josiah, Jacomb ran a printing shop in Stratford, London Stratford where he produced much early SPGB literature, including the Socialist Standard from 1904 to 1914, as well as work for trade union s. In 1906 the Jacomb brothers were involved in a scandal regarding the book Womanhood book Womanhood which they printed and sold. Although this book probably dealt with contraception and the like, it was deemed obscene by the authorities. Carter was a representative of the United States War Department Commission on Training Camps from 1917 to 1919. He was an attorney for the California State Board of Pharmacy in 1920 and 1921 and commissioner of public works of Oakland 1921 1925 and in 1923 initiated the plan for a comprehensive development of the harbor on the east side of San Francisco Bay . He was the president of the Pacific Coast Association of Port Authorities .
