Born in Reudnitz near Leipzig , Penck became a university professor in University of Vienna Vienna from 1885 to 1906, and in Humboldt University Berlin from 1906 to 1927. There he was also the director of the Institute and Museum for Oceanography by 1918. Penck dedicated himself to geomorphology and climatology and raised the international profile of the Vienna School of physical geography . In 1945, Penck died in Prague. Since 1886, he was married to the sister of the successful Bavaria n regional writer Ludwig Ganghofer . In memory of Penck, the painter and sculptor Ralf Winkler adopted the nom de plume A. R. Albrecht Dold August 5, 1928, Triberg, Germany &ndash September 26, 2011 was a German mathematician specializing in algebraic topology who proved the Dold Thom theorem , the Dold Kan theorem , and introduced Dold manifold s, Dold Puppe stabilization , and Dold fibration s. Albrecht Dold studied mathematics and physics at the University of Heidelberg, then worked for some years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, at Columbia University, New York and at the University of Z rich. In 1963 he returned to Heidelberg, where he stayed most of his career. Dold s seminal work in algebraic topology, in particular, his work on fixed point theory has made him known in economics as well as mathematics, and his book Lectures on Algebraic Topology is a standard reference among economists as well as mathematicians.
