    Alexander Hamilton Sands 1828 1887 was born in Williamsburg, Virginia and attended William and Mary College from the ages of 10 through 14. His education there was cut short by the death of his father in 1842 causing him to leave the College and move to Richmond, Virginia. There he entered the law office of his brother William G. Sands, who was the clerk of the Superior Court of Law and Chancery in the City of Richmond. He read the law under the tutelage of his brother and Superior Court Judge Robertson and procured his license to practice law on April 13, 1849, at the age of twenty one. Hamilton Gordon was the second son of Prime Minister George Hamilton Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen , by his second marriage to Harriet, daughter of the Hon. John Douglas. Arthur Hamilton Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore , was his younger brother. He served in the British Army and achieved the rank of General. Apart from his military career he was also an Honorary Equerry to Victoria of the United Kingdom Queen Victoria and sat as Member of Parliament for East Aberdeenshire UK Parliament constituency Aberdeenshire East between 1875 and 1885. Hamilton Gordon married Caroline Emilia Mary, daughter of John Herschel Sir John Herschel, 1st Baronet , in 1852. They had five sons and four daughters. His eldest son Alexander Hamilton Gordon 1859 1939 Alexander also became a successful soldier. Hamilton Gordon died in May 1890, aged 72.
