He was a Teachta D la TD for constituencies in County Galway for over thirty years, and then a Seanad ireann Senator for 8 years. Killilea was a founder member of Fianna F il and a farmer and shopkeeper before entering politics. He was elected to D il ireann on his first attempt, at the Irish general election, June 1927 June 1927 general election in the nine seat Galway D il ireann constituency Galway constituency. He took his seat in the 5th D il , along with the 44 other Fianna F il TDs who ended the Irish Republicanism Republican policy of abstention and took the disputed oath of allegiance, dismissing it as an empty formula . He was re elected at the Irish general election, September 1927 September 1927 general election . However, in the Fianna F il victory at the Irish general election, 1932 1932 general election , it won no new seats in Galway. All five sitting Fianna F il TDs stood for re election, but the party ran a total of seven candidates in the constituency and Killilea was one of the two sitting TDs to lose their seats to party colleagues. He was re elected the following year, displacing Cumann na nGaedheal s Joseph Mongan . During his early career he was known simply as Christy O Connor, but his nephew of the same name also became a prominent golfer, and since that time they have been referred to as Christy O Connor Senior and Christy O Connor Jnr Christy O Connor Junior , respectively.
