In 1941, at the age of seventeen he joined the British Indian Army and was sent to fight the Japanese in the War in Burma where he proved himself to be a very brave and capable soldier. Raja Saif Ali Khan was the cousin of General Raja Sakhi Daler Khan of Sarsawa. In 1946 he was involved in a fight with 14 Gurkha soldiers from the Maharaja s army in which he injured all 14 of them using his hookah which was made out of stone. As a result he was arrested and taken to Jammu where he was tortured and imprisoned. After his release from prison he joined the Mujahideen fighters led by General Raja Sakhi Daler Khan. There are many examples of Raja Saif Ali Khan s bravery. During the battle for Rajouri, the Mujahideen were completely surrounded by the regular forces of the Indian Army who had blocked their escape route. Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force was dropping supplies of ammunition and rations to its own soldiers. The only way for the Mujahideen to survive was to capture these supplies before the Indian soldiers could get to them. One of the Mujahideen who volunteered for this was Raja Fakir Khan of village Buruyan, Sehnsa who was gunned down near a machine gun bunker as he attempted this very brave and dangerous task. It was Raja Saif Ali Khan who then volunteered to retrieve the body of the Shaheed Martyr Raja Fakir Khan as he crawled to the body under intense machine gun fire and carried it back to the safety of the Mujahideen.
