The natives told them about the nine mile long portage and John Giscome wrote an article about the trail that was later published in a Victoria, British Columbia Victoria newspaper. Despite the newspaper coverage, the trail saw little use until the height of the Omineca Gold Rush in 1871, when nearly 400 miners petitioned the government for the funds to build a wagon road over the portage so they could more easily travel to the Omineca gold fields. Frog Portage or Portage du Traite was one of the most important portages on the voyageur route from eastern Canada to the Mackenzie River basin. Numerous attempts were made to build the thin Wisconsin Fox connection through the marshy land, beginning in 1837 with the formation of the Portage Canal Company . Digging and hauling by hand through two and a half miles of muddy terrain, the project was quickly abandoned. A second project, started in 1849, managed to cut a path usable by canoe, but not viable for commerce. The final project, complete with locks to raise the water level of the Fox to that of the Wisconsin s was not completed until 1876 by the Army Corps of Engineers . Unfortunately, by then, the railroads were quick on their way, followed soon thereafter by the automobile. The Portage Canal acquired a new steel gate and concrete lock in 1926 due to a rupture of the 1876 wooden gate and the quoin post of the west gate of the lock in April 1926. A local contractor, M.E. The Namekagon Portage sometimes referred to as the Namekagon Court Oreilles Portage was a well known canoe portage connecting the St. Croix River Wisconsin Minnesota St. Croix River watershed to the Chippewa River Wisconsin Chippewa River watershed and was located about five miles south of the present day city of Hayward city , Wisconsin Hayward in Sawyer County , Wisconsin . The portage ran approximately two and one half miles from the Namekagon River in the St. Croix River Wisconsin Minnesota St. Croix River watershed to Windigo Lake in the Chippewa River Wisconsin Chippewa River watershed. The route then proceeded from Windigo Lake through Grindstone Lake to Lac Courte Oreilles where a well known Ojibwa village was located. When using the Bois Brule River route from Lake Superior , the Namekagon Portage provided Indians and earlier traders and explorers with two major options for reaching the Mississippi River as described below.
