Halpatter Tustennuggee 1795 c. 1857 , also known as Chief Alligator was a chief of the Seminole people . Biography In 1817, Alligator founded Lake City, Florida . In that time period, there was Second Seminole War conflict between the United States and the Seminoles, and Alligator had to fight against the American invaders. He signed the Treaty of Payne s Landing , which ended the war between the two, but never gave up his campaigns against the Creek people nor the US. In 1835, he opposed Indian agent Wiley Thompson , who tried to remove the rest of the chiefs from Alligator Town . The four other war chiefs successfully changed his mind. In 1837, he was one of the main leaders at the battle of Okeechobee , leading Abiaka s soldiers after another warrior fired the first shot. The United States troops were hacked at by Alligator himself, and the Indians made a stand against the troops. After the Seminoles defeat, Alligator was allowed on the land of the Cherokee people . Also, the chief refused to be accepted as a Creek or follow their beliefs. Though he insisted on Seminole, it was 1856 when the Creeks finally recognized their separation. One year after then, Alligator sent his children to learn the alphabet and spelling at a missionary. Afterwards, there was no further mention of him. Alligator boats were a type of steamboat used throughout Ontario from the mid 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century in the forestry industry. They were a notable symbol of Canada s early industrial era. The boats were so named because of their ability to travel between lakes in Northern Ontario by pulling themselves with a winch across land. The only currently operating alligator boat is located in Simcoe, Ontario . The Alligator was an amphibious machine designed and patented in Canada in the late 1880s. The technical name for the boats style is a warping tug . They were capable of towing a log boom across a lake and then portaging themselves using a winch to the next body of water. It is a close relative of Grains of Paradise grains of paradise , obtained from the closely related species, Aframomum melegueta . However, unlike grains of paradise which are generally sold as only the seeds of the plant, Alligator pepper is sold as the entire pod containing the seeds in the same manner to another close relative, Black Cardamom black cardamom . The plants which provide alligator pepper are herbaceous perennials of the ginger Zingiberaceae family of flowering plants that are native to swampy habitats along the West African coast. Once the pod is open and the seeds are revealed the reason for this spice s common English name becomes apparent as the seeds have a papery skin enclosing them and the bumps of the seeds within this skin is reminiscent of an alligator s back. As mbongo spice the seeds of alligator pepper is often sold as the grains themselves, isolated from the pod and with the outer skin removed.
