  1. Betacism

Unreferenced date October 2008 In historical linguistics , betacism is a sound change in which IPA b the voiced bilabial plosive , like in bane shifts to IPA v the voiced labiodental fricative , like in English vane . Betacism is a fairly common phenomenon it has taken place in Greek language Greek , Hebrew language Hebrew , and Spanish language Spanish , among others. In Ancient Greek language Classical Greek , the letter Beta letter beta < > denoted IPA b . As a result of betacism, it has come to denote IPA v in Modern Greek . Modern Greek uses the digraph < > to represent IPA b . Indeed, this is the origin of the word betacism . Perhaps the best known example of betacism is in the Romance languages . The first traces of betacism in Latin can be found in the third century C.E. The results of the shift are most widespread in the Western Romance languages , especially in Spanish language Spanish , where the letters < b> and < v> are now both pronounced IPA the voiced bilabial fricative , which is similar to IPA v except phrase initially and after IPA m when they are pronounced IPA b the two sounds IPA and IPA b are now allophone s. A similar phenomenon takes place in Persian language Persian in casual speech. Citation needed date October 2008 Another example is in Neapolitan language Neapolitan , or in Maceratese dialect of Macerata which uses < v> to denote betacism produced IPA v , such that Italian language Italian bocca corresponds to Neapolitan vocca and to Maceratese vocca , Italian albero to arvero , and barba to Neapolitan varva and Maceratese varba . Betacism occurred in Ancient Hebrew the sound IPA b denoted < > changed to IPA and eventually to IPA v except when gemination geminated or when following a consonant or pause. As a result, the two sounds became allophone s but, due to later sound changes, including the loss of gemination, the distinction become phoneme phonemic in Modern Hebrew . 1. Gold Coast alphabet

The Gold Coast alphabet was a Latin alphabets Latin alphabet used to write the Akan language during British colonial rule of the Gold Coast British colony Gold Coast , now Ghana . It differed from the current Akan alphabet in several ways, of which the most fundamental was in vowel notation. Vowels Akan has nine vowels, four pairs that differ whether they have an advanced tongue root sc atr , and IPA a , which is sc atr neutral. In the Gold Coast script, the non sc atr vowels were written with the five vowels of the Latin script, a e i o u, and the sc atr vowels by adding a subscript dot to these. The sc atr vowels have a hollow sound to them, whereas the non sc atr vowels sound rather like the lax vowel s of English. In modern Akan, seven vowel letters are used, with two of them being ambiguous. In addition, the Gold Coast script used a tilde to mark nasal vowel s, which are not marked in modern Akan. class wikitable IPA Phoneme Sound Gold br Coast Modern br Akan align center i i i align center i i rowspan 2 e align center e e align center e e align center a a rowspan 2 a rowspan 2 a align center a align center o o align center o o rowspan 2 o align center u u align center u u u nowiki nowiki The allophone of IPA a produced by vowel harmony with sc atr vowels is not itself sc atr in Asante dialect, but nontheless is markedly distinct from the IPA a allophone.
