    Image Mangatangi Reservoir Hunua Ranges.JPG thumb right Mangatangi reservoir in the Hunua Ranges The Hunua Ranges form a block of hilly country to the southeast of Auckland in New Zealand s North Island . They cover some 250 square kilometres 100 sq mi , containing 178  km of parkland, and rise to 688 metres 2255  ft at Kohukohunui. Auckland gets much of its Water resources in New Zealand water from Reservoir water reservoirs within the Hunua Ranges. The ranges are located approximately 50 kilometres 30  mi southeast of Auckland, above the western shore of the Firth of Thames . They are sparsely populated, and mostly lie within the boundaries of the Waharau and Hunua Ranges Regional Parks. Maori made some use of the ranges and early European visitors found areas of clearing that had been used as gardens. Ng i Tai are tangata whenua. Some Maori archaeological sites are known. The main part of the ranges was subject to confiscation after the New Zealand Wars . Early European use of the ranges was for timber extraction and for farming but low soil fertility limited success.     Refimprove date March 2007 The Mamaku Ranges are a range of rugged hills in the North Island of New Zealand . Located to the west of Lake Rotorua and north of Lake Taupo , they lie to the immediate south of the Kaimai Range and can be thought of as an extension of it, in much the same way that the Kaimai Range can be considered an extension of the Coromandel Range . The hills terminate in the south with the valley of the Waikato River . At their highest, the Mamaku Ranges rise to over 600 metres, and much of the high ground within the hills forms a plateau. The range is extensively forested, with the Kaimai Mamaku State Forest and Kinleith Forest both covering a considerable part of them.     Unreferenced date August 2007 Strzelecki Ranges , also known as Strzelecki Hills is a low mountain range in the Gippsland region of south eastern Australia between the Latrobe Valley to the north and Bass Strait to the south. It is named after Pawe Edmund Strzelecki , a Poland Polish explorer, who led an expedition through this region in the 1840s. Temperate rainforest, populated by 90 metre tall Eucalyptus regnans Mountain Ash , originally covered the ranges but much of it was logged in the late 19th and early 20th century. Some of what remains has been protected inside the Tarra Bulga National Park and the Mount Worth State Park . The spectacular Grand Ridge Road winds through the ranges and provides picturesque views over the Latrobe Valley and to the south towards Wilsons Promontory . Settlers from Melbourne in the 1860s struggled to penetrate the area until the arrival of the Gippsland Railway in the 1870s.
