  1. Altarpiece

An altarpiece is a picture or relief representing a religious subject and suspended in a frame behind the altar of a church. The altarpiece is often made up of two or more separate panels created using a technique known as panel painting . It is then called a diptych , triptych or polyptych for two, three, and multiple panels respectively. In the thirteenth century each panel was usually surmounted with a pinnacle, but in the Renaissance , single panel, or pala , altarpieces became the norm. In both cases the supporting plinth, or predella often featured supplementary and related paintings. In the eighteenth century altarpieces, such as Piero della Francesca s polyptych of St Augustine, were often disassembled and seen as independent artworks. 1. Petrobelli altarpiece

refimprove date October 2009 Around 1563, the cousins Girolamo and Antonio Petrobelli commissioned a huge altarpiece for the church of San Francesco in the small town of Lendinara , near Venice. They turned to Paolo Veronese , a celebrated painter with strong ties to the region. The cousins hoped that the spectacular work would seal their status as one of the leading families in the town. Set above the altar in their burial chapel, Veronese s painting shows the two men protected by their name saints. The cousins are privileged to witness a miraculous apparition, a foretaste of the future the archangel Saint Michael , who will weigh the souls of the dead at the Last Judgment . Above, we see the dead Christ, who died to redeem mankind. Veronese offered his patrons a compellingly realistic depiction of a visionary scene, and captured the hope of the faithful Christian for salvation. Division In the late 18th century, the church of San Francesco was demolished, and the Petrobelli altarpiece sold. An art dealer, seeking to maximize his profit, divided up the painting into four pieces. Their history was quickly forgotten, and the fragments eventually came to rest in public collections in England Dulwich Picture Gallery , Scotland National Gallery of Scotland , Canada National Gallery of Canada , and the United States Blanton Museum of Art . Restoration Close examination of the fragments, years of study, and careful restoration were needed to reconstruct the altarpiece s original form. In 2009, an exhibition in Dulwich temporarily reunited the fragments for the first time in over two hundred years. ref http www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk pdf Veronese 20PRESS 20SHOW.pdf ref The restored picture travelled to Canada and the USA later the same year. It was painted for the church in 1484, commissioned by bishop Jacopo Vagnucci , a native of Cortona , Signorelli s birthplace. Description The scene portrayed is an Holy Conversation , with a high throne where the Virgin and Child sit, and which is placed over a Classical style pedestal and crowned by a small engraved arch featuring a festoon with vegetables. Maria is reading a Bible, while Jesus holds a white lily, symbolizing her virginity and pureness. Over a gilted step are St. John the Baptist and St. Lawrence , surmounted by two flying angels. On the marble step, below, Signorelli portrayed a sitting angle who is playing a lute , perhaps a homage to elements typical of the contemporary Venetian school such as the San Cassiano Altarpiece by Antonello da Messina . The angel also resembles one painted by Signorelli in the Basilica della Santa Casa , at Loreto , a few years before. Standing on the foreground pavement are St. Onofrius and St. Herculanus, the patrons of Perugia . Infobox Painting image file Lotto, pala dell alabarda 01.jpg title Altarpiece of the Halberd artist Lorenzo Lotto year c. 1539 type Oil on canvas height 294 width 216 city Ancona museum Pinacoteca civica Francesco Podesti The Altarpiece of the Halberd is a painting from around 1539 by the Italy Italian High Renaissance painter Lorenzo Lotto . It is housed in the Pinacoteca civica Francesco Podesti of Ancona , central Italy. History The work was seen by the art biographer Giorgio Vasari in the church of Sant Agostino, Ancona Sant Agostino in Ancona, where Lotto had fled in reply to the hostility received in Venice. It was later moved to the church of Santa Maria della Piazza and, after other locations, the current one. The painting dates to a few years after the coup by which Ancona had been restored to the Papal States . The resistance had been brutally suppressed, many of the rebels having been beheaded by order of the papal legate. The upside down halberd has been thus interpreted as a symbol of peace. Description The monumental composition is taken directly from the tradition of Holy Conversation s in the Venetian School , inaugurated by Antonello da Messina s San Cassiano Altarpiece . It shows the Madonna and Child on a high throne, with two angels holding the crown a 15th century Flemish painting element also in use in Italy . In the lower part are four saints Stephen, John the Evangelist, Simon the Zealot and St. Lawrence Lawrence . Simon is holding the halberd which gives its name to the altarpiece. At the sides of the throne, between columns and draperies, are two sections of sky with clouds. Like in other Lotto s works, the symmetry is broken by the variety of postures and gestures the work is general characterized by a certain archaic style, explainable by the relatively provincial commissioners and the late stage of his career. History Gherardo di Bartolomeo Barbadori, who died childless in 1429, left his heritage to the Captains of Orsanmichele for the realization, in the church of Santo Spirito, Florence Santo Spirito , of a chapel dedicated to san Frediano . The chapel was built in the old sacristy of the church and in 1433 it was decided to place there an altarpiece. The work was commissioned to Filippo Lippi around 1437, and a letter from Piero de Medici to Domenico Veneziano , dated 1 April 1438, mentions the altarpiece as having not been finished yet. The painting remained in Santo Spirito until 1810, when it was disassembled and brought to France by the Napoleonic war Napoleonic troops . After the 1815 restoration it was not given back. Description The panel follows the traditional polyptych pattern of the time only in the upper part, which has arcades and columns. Also differently from previous works, Lippi painted the Virgin as standing, and making her the central point of the composition. The angel on the left pulling up his garment is inspired to Nanni di Banco s group of the Quattro Coronati , a sculpture in a niche of Orsanmichele. Another element of innovation introduced at the same time also by Fra Angelico was the lack of a gilted background, replaced by an architectural space with a window opening to hilly landscape, inspired to Flemish painting Flemish contemporary works . Later, in unknown circumstances, it was transferred to the current location in Bardi, a town near Parma here, in 1860, members of the Academy of Fine Arts of Parma recognized as by Parmigianino, although the identification remained disputed until the 1930s. Description The work depicts the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, set a in a fake niche with a colonnade surmounting the background curved wall. The scheme is that of the Holy Conversation . In the middle is the Virgin sitting on a tall throne, above a historiated section of column decorated with a barely visible putto , giving the Child to St. Catherine, on the left, who receives the symbolic marriage ring. File Mathis Gothart Gr newald 058.jpg thumb Panel of the Tauberbischofsheim Altar Crucifixion File Mathis Gothart Gr newald 060.jpg thumb Panel of the Tauberbischofsheim Altar Christ Bearing the Cross The Taubischofsheim altarpiece earlier known as the Karlsruhe altarpiece or Karlsruhe panels German Taubischofsheimer Altar , Karlsruher Altar , and Karlsruher Taflen , respectively is a late work by the Germany German Northern Renaissance Renaissance painter Matthias Gr newald , probably completed between 1523 and 1525. The earliest written references to the work come from the 18th century, when the altarpiece was still in the Church of St. Martin in Tauberbischofsheim . Its original location and the identity of the patron who commissioned it are not known, but it is assumed that they both were in Tauberbischofsheim. The panels, which today are displayed separately, were originally painted on either side of a 196 cm by 152 cm wooden panel. Whether the pieces were the central part of a polyptych is uncertain, however. In order to display the work in an art museum, the panel was split in half during its first restoration in 1883. The paintings have been in the collection of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe since 1900. References Heinrich Feurstein Matthias Gr newald . It is housed in the church of Santi Bartolomeo e Stefano, Bergamo , northern Italy . File Lotto, pala martinengo 01.jpg left 240px thumb Detail with an angel and the lion. History On 15 May 1516 Lotto was in Bergamo to sign a contract for a large altarpiece for the high altar of the church of San Bartolomeo, funded by Alessandro Martinengo Colleoni, who had chosen the church as the family s new burial place the outstanding Colleoni Chapel is located nearby . It was finished three years later, as testified by the signature, and was paid 500 ducat Italian coin ducats . The painting, the largest ever painted by Lotto, was once accompanied by a series of minor panels, which were dispersed in the following centuries and have been only partially identified. Description The subject of the painting is a Holy Conversation , with the Virgin and the Child sitting on a throne surrounded by saints. The scene is set in a majestic architecture perhaps inspired by Bramante style. In the center, where the dome should be, is the tholobate , whose pendentives decorated with Mark and John the Evangelists. Two angels are watching from a balaustrade, perhaps inspired by Andrea Mantegna Mantegna s Camera degli Sposi . Two other angels fly over Mary holding her crown. The interpretation of the numerous symbols of the picture is disputed. Some of the objects could be taken from Francesco Colonna s Hypnerotomachia Poliphili , alluding to the rule of Republic of Venice Venice in Bergamo, of which Martinengo was a supporter. The inscription in the upper part, saying Divina Suave , would be a reference to Venice. In the lower part, the Virgin sits on a throne having a zoomorphic base ...   more details

Several scholars have supposed that a young Raphael collaborated on the predella. file Pietro Perugino cat45a.jpg left thumb 220px Lunette. Description The Madonna is portrayed on a luminous landscape of hills, on a high throne in front of her is a pedestal with, on it, a mystic vase, and featuring the signature and date, which were always added by Perugino when the painting was produced in his workshop and then shipped to the destination. Mary holds the Child in the same fashion of the Decemviri Altarpiece of 1495 1496. The predella includes the scenes of the Nativity of Mary , the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple , the Marriage of the Virgin , the Annunciation and the Assumption ...   more details
