Iscayachi is a sparsely populated town on the Bolivia n Altiplano , located at the Villazon Junction north of Tarija, Bolivia Tarija , at an elevation of 3,426 meters. The population is reported to be 1,153. The name Iscayachi is probably derived from the Quechua word Iskaychay , meaning to divide in two. The reason for this name is not immediately obvious, but could refer to several things, the most likely being the road, which splits in two at the junction. Iscayachi has a simple guest house, and birdwatchers find it be a productive location to view the avifauna of the Altiplano. The geography of Bolivia geography and climate of Bolivia climate of Bolivia has led to the formation a wide variety of lakes, from salt saturated lakes in the Altiplano to oxbow lakes in the eastern lowlands. Many of Bolivias lakes are formed only seasonally during the austral summer and remains for the rest of the year as salt flat s in the altiplano or swamp s in the eastern lowlands. Lakes in the Altiplano basin All major lakes in the Altiplano belong to the same endorreic basin that when supplied with enough water ends at Salar de Uyuni . Many of the lakes in the altiplano show large fluctuations in area like Poop Lake that has dried up several times through history.
